Since bringing the Zed out of winter hibernation the temp gauge has been playing up.

From cold it has a strange issue where as soon you accelerate the gauge goes down, almost exactly does the opposite of the turbo gauge vacuum, soon as that starts giving positive boost the temp gauge goes down then returns back up as soon as you take your foot off the gas.

Once warm no issues.

What's should I check?

That's a really odd one!

For what they cost I'd probably just swap out the temperature sender, for example:-

Its probably not that though, but I'd try it first. Failing that check the wiring to the sender and there's a possibility the gauge cluster has an issue with a component or dry joint.

Start simple first. :)

Had exactly this on my previous Z. Turned out to be just a loose plug on the sender. Ten second job with WD40 for good measure. Hope that's what you've got, certainly worth trying first off!

Yup mine did it to. Soon as you hit the loud pedal it would drop to zero. The sensor connection was popping off slightly.

Stephen,

Did you ever attempt to remove your oil filter tree with the motor in the car?

I'm new to this forum, and couldn't see an option to PM you or send you an email.

Please let me know what you concluded.

Thanks

Hi Stephen, I never received an email from you.

Hoping to receive one soon, so we can start the discussion on the oil filter tree removal :)

Going back to the OP...check for a loose connector as stated by others as what happens is when you give it some the in-rush of air from the viscous fan forces the connector to move iff its loose..on idle or gentle driving it stays put and makes the connection. Bin the plastic connector shroud as with this still on you cant see how loose it actually is.3 seconds with a pair of plyers later and nice tight connector.

The connector for the tempguage is on the top metal pipe coming from the engine

As others have said check the connection If it's at all loose take it off and tighten the connector and replace

If that doesn't clear it check the water level !

yep single wire

If you look at the connectors, the pin connection is like a little box with a slot. You can push the flats either side of the box to make a v shape. Pinches the connection better.
