Just wondering if anyone's ever done this? I'm aware of fitting proceedure and expense etc, but wondering if anyone's ever bought a brand new one?

 

Mine has been making a squeek on hard braking for a while now, it doesn't affect braking, it's still pretty good considering I'm on stock brakes (only for another few weeks). I've had a spare sat in my garage for ages, but I just don't trust parts like this with diaphrams in them that are for a critical part of the vehicle.

 

I also don't trust a lot of used parts anymore [period], as, lets face it, these cars are pretty old now.

 

So, yeah, has anyone fitted a new brake servo/booster? Did it 'feel' any different? Diaphrams go hard and can split over time, so wondering what a brand new one would feel like to anyone that's ever fitted one.

....actually, they've been discontinued, but Z1 are now selling remanufactured ones (that I sourced for them of course). :)

Can't comment on a new one but I stripped mine, repainted and checked for any deterioration.

Will be testing it shortly

How did you separate the two parts of the unit? They're pressed together aren't they?

It may not be the servo, but a leak in the piping that is causing the squeak - worth checking/replacing that first before tackling the major job.

I'll have another look, but my pipes are in pretty decent condition. It comes from directly behind the bulkhead.

Not pressed mate, you actually just need to rotate the front part relative to the back plate a couple of degrees. There are a couple of ramp like protrusions pressed into the outer can, it acts like a big bayonet fitting.

 

However, 20 years of the rubber being compressed and a little surface rust makes it ba:$@?(d tight. I had a spare so I gave it a go.

For the mechanically brave only

I have fitted a 2nd hand brake booster to my old Zed when the diaphragm inside got a tiny split in it.

You can test the booster by blowing into the vacuum hose port, if its split you will be able to blow through continuously if its not then you won't.

My failed booster also made the squeeking noise, although not all the time and mostly under hard braking.

From what I can remember it did improve braking performance noticeably once replaced.
