Hi guys

I recently bought my 300zx tt manual and have been slowly trying to iron out all the niggling faults.

The car vibrates through the body of the car and gets quite severe at times.

I got car on ramp and checked for sticking brakes, worn bushes, play in suspension but from what I seen looks ok. Also checked gearbox mount which also looks good.

Decided to check the prop as guy I bought it from fitted a paddle clutch and thought the prop being removed never got fitted correctly.

Checked the prop for play in bearing which has no play, totally solid, I did notice the prop was sitting low in the bush housing.

Took the prop off tonight just to double check the bush and it is completely solid no rips or perishing. Only thing I can see is the bush sits off centre to the outer housing.

Is this normal on z32? All other bushes I have changed have been dead centre.

The prop also looks like it has never been split so balance should still be ok.

Anyone have any other ideas to look for?

Thanks

Rich

Centre prop bearing is a common cause of vibration at around 40 mph and over, it may look ok, but its 20year old rubber thats taken a hammering, change it and your vibration will be solved, if the other bushes and gearbox mount look to be ok.

check first that, if the prop has been removed at some point, it may not have been placed back in the same orientation, so rotate 180deg as it may be out of balance

That's what I mean with the bearing sitting off centre and is totally solid no perishing or anything.

I'm used to the bush being pretty much centre with a little flexibility.

If this is not normal on a zed I will get a single prop ordered just be hacked off spending £200 to find that's the way it's meant to be!

It is around 30 -40mph that it starts to get a really violent vibration. If I slow down it goes away.

Thanks Groover that's what I thought

The single piece props still readily available?

Yes, our club trader Jeff @ Zedworld can sort you a reputable UK manufactured, single piece prop for a reasonable price.

Out of interest, do you find that, after you've driven for quite a few minutes, the vibrations tend to fade slightly? This is typical of the bushing material "warming up" and becoming more supple and absorbing the vibrations slightly.

Thanks Joely ill get one from Jeff I think iv seen a few guys are running them from the forum.

To be honest I haven't driven it long enough to heat up to much but in the time I have driven it I have not noticed it improving.

Another reason I haven't driven it much is headlights at the moment are terrible and can hardly see if I'm driving home at night.

The car stays in my workshop gets a quick blast to shop and back to workshop until I sort all these issues out.

Want to get it mechanically 110% perfect before I look at painting it for the summer.

If it's parked for long periods, it could be something as simple as flat spotted tyres. Mine does this occasionally, normally after a winter hibernation, but after a spirited drive getting some heat into the tyres, it all settles down nicely again.

I think the car was parked up for a while before I bought it, so I thought the same thing.

I stuck the wheels on the balancer and made sure the tyres where ok and rebalanced but nothing wrong the balanced out the same.

I even tried swapping over the spare set of alloys but didn't cure it.

Headlights dull another common issue, you will find many years of grime inside the projector lens and the inside of the glass itself. It can be cleaned using a bit of cloth on a bendy stick, like a swab, or take them apart and give them a good clean, will make a world of difference. The fit some HID 55watt 5000k and you will be amazed at the difference

Are the lights easy enough to strip down?

Ill need to give that a try with the HID is there a specific kit that seems to be good for z32?

Need to do something with them, hid make a big difference.

H3 is the kit you need, most of us have used the £35 ish ones off ebay with no issues, headlights have a rubber sealant so need heating around the glass to loosen up but very easy to take apart once out of the car.

There are 4 10mm nuts holding it in place and is a pain with the bumper still on, but doable.

Great ill look at ordering a set today if that's all I costs, remember when HID kits were £££££

Some nice person decided to smash the mirror on the 350 last night as well so set for an expensive day.
