Hi guys,

So just taken the zed on a 200m motorway trip to brum. All fine last night but this morning it was ticking from the head on idle quite loudly!.. when raising the revs for a few seconds it died down, but then came back again when idling. Stayed like this for 5-10 mins before quietening down... sat waiting for the air pump at moment and it seems normal again.

Oil was replaced at xmas, have done around 4k. Should I start diggin deeper?..

Thanks, W

I do my oil every 1500 miles or sooner if I see a drop in pressure. It goes off really quickly when it goes, starts tapping for more than 30 seconds on start and the hot pressure will be uncomfortably low.

I'd start with an oil change.

What he said + add a good flush before draining old oil and drain it hot of course

I agree with the above. I personally do not like additives or flushes.

Do a number of oil changes in quick succession; quality modern oils have detergents in them anyway. If they aren't removing the blockages in the lifters, then take the lifters out and soak them in diesel for a few days.

If a constant ticking noise is present then there is an issue that needs investigating, of course carry out oil service, but if it was only done recent then I wouldn't expect to see an improvement, it's most likely cause is cam followers, worn cam journals or crank/big end bearings worn, or oil pump getting lazy, in short find the issue and fix it ASAP.

yep

And never never use cheap oil or filters, lubrication is critical to an engines performance and lifespan, don't cut corners here. I see so many avoidable engine issues. all for the sake of a regular oil change.

Noisy lifter ....... Flush engine through, refill with clean oil and use wynns lifter treatment start the engine, go for a blast, and then change the oil again And check for oil leaks as well because oil leaks reduce the oil pressure available to the lifters

Lifter treatment waste of time and money mate, as is most oil and fuel additives, and unless a significant leak is present on say a oil cooler line or turbo feed, no visible oil leak will cause a pressure drop. :thumbup1:

Thanks for the feedback guys! Okay well this has only started happening recently. It used to tick for about 3 seconds if it had been stood for a week on cold start. I will get a few oil changes done over the next couple of weeks and see if that helps. Fingers crossed it wont end up being something more sinister! It has never seemed to lose oil.

Fixed mine !

I've had good results with Wynn's in the past on a C20XE, known for noisy lifters.

All my cars get a litre of diesel in the engine & 30 mins idling if service has been lacking. Works a treat.

Nothing to be scared about. Wouldn't do it if it caused any issues. The Zed got it 2.5 years ago: Now at 120k, 25psi, 570bhp, 24yr old bearings, perfect oil pressure, oil stays nice & clean between services. Services which are few & far between because I keep my engine in average condition for testing purposes.

yup, cleaned out a few cars with a mixture of diesel and gearbox oil.

cleans out the oil system no end.

My old Granada cosworth had it done, and after 8k miles the oil was still very golden with only a hint of turning black.

Absolutely. A flush or additive whether its wynns, diesel, forte etc won't repair a worn lifter but it will help clean a clogged or sludged one. It doesn't always work but I've had more than enough success dealing with dozens of rarely serviced and tapetty engines to know it's not a bad thing.

IMHO if flushing removes any crap/sludge it can only go one direction, into the sump where it WILL consequently cause more problems blocking pump pick up screen etc. it only moves the crap from one place to another. draining oil in most engines leaves a fair bit behind including the crap. as said each to their own, but I have had to repair many engines after flushing.

Each to their own, whatever works for you. I've heard there can be risks with crap moving about during flushing but ive never experienced it. Yet.

Thats why I said flush it through with clean oil after !

Will make no difference, crap will remain. pull a sump after its drained overnight and amaze yourself with the crap and oil left behind. :thumbup1:
