Yeah basically. All z32s had the same cams aside from the automatics which have a milder cam, less duration there's an 8 degree difference.

What's the difference between the turbo's??

What's the difference between the turbo's??

The turbos have a smaller impellor on auto gearbox configured cars allowing a quicker spooling time. It's just different due to the way the autobox delivers power. The autobox only has 4-speeds, so cams and turbos are different to create a different powerband for the changed gear ratios and reduction in number of gears.

This is something that I have wondered after doing a NA to TT swap..... Was it an Auto or Manual setup that I fitted??

What turbo's, what Cams??

As the heads were complete with bottom end, Turbo's came with the engine......

How can I tell what cams I have.... Markings?

What is Auto turbo part number and what is Manual???

I too would like to know if it would effect performance.....

Sorry, don't want to hijack your thread Hellraiser

Watching my Z disintegrate on my driveway!!!

The turbos have exactly the same internals. The only difference is the turbine housing AR ratio. 0.54 for autos vs 0.63 for manuals.

So, do the cams make a difference if you have aftermarket turbos? And which are better, auto or manual cams

The intake cams on a manual have a bigger duration this means the cam profile lets the valve stay open a fraction longer. What im asking is will it create a noticable lag in the auto turbos or will i gain any useable power.? I know the auto v manual power is supposidly 260 hp v 280 hp.im mildly porting and polishing the heads and am going for a quick spooling auto turbos with 360 deg bearings and stepped gap seals. Im also thinking of the 2.5 inch intake system like what jaffa is doing and relocating the intercooler where the rad sits to reduce the intake length. This i feel will give the auto turbos the best possible chance of producing some good usable power in a street drag situation.....

The ar is the throat diameter in the snail part of the housing..where a smaller ar will increase velocity of the gasses flowing but chokes the maximum flow hence fast spool but reduced top end power..?am i right in saying that noel?

I don't think there is any real discernible difference between auto & manual turbos. They're both small turbos. Autos had 280PS, manuals closer to 300PS. I really wish I had run my stockers on a manual set up, my drag times were hindered by dying autobox :(

Yes, slight decrease in spool time with a smaller AR, slightly less top end.

P.S. Just remembered I'm supposed to be checking something for you! I've been away a fair bit, will get onto it ASAP!

Hellraiser, do your different cams have any markings to distinguish between auto/manual, intake/exhaust?

The auto intake cams have a yellow band painted around them if its still there after all these years. The manual intake cams ahould have a green one. Be careful tho as oil can change the colours. My green manual ones look to be more black now but there was a hint of green remaining.

imho un-noticable in any configaration. Ive had both on un-matched gearboxes, tubs and cams and did,nt notice anything..

Thanks guys. Decided I'm going to use the manual cams on a manual box with auto tubs and hopefully a short intake and tub pipework so this car should spool ubar quick.... its a street car need it responsive not bragging rights down the pub. I want response With little lag :) just may take me longer then expected to complete...
