You may read about the Highways agency putting in new speed cameras to catch motorists in an variable speed limit zone going speeding past a gantry where there isn't a camera

Well they are now active and set for exactly 70mph on the M6, M42, southern section of the M25 and today I've just seen one in action on the M1. It flashed as a guy on the other side went past , Seeing what they look like and and knowing what to look for it seems they are going to be on every gantry soon because the control box and wiring is being put in place on loads of gantries.... and obviously already live on some

You have been warned.

I'll stick to the A1 and go cross country !

looks like ile have to put a speed limiter on my 15 year old Nissan pick-up then...another half ton of stone on the back of it should do it:clown:

My old van was like that, speed restricted to 65 due to it having the areo dynamics of a brick and all the stability of an egg.

Found this on a credible newspaper source (ie, not some shitty tabloid gossip nonsense useful only as a litter tray liner) http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/road-and-rail-transport/11375836/Stealth-speed-cameras-to-be-deployed-on-300-miles-of-motorway.html

I expect they'll have them set at the recommended 10%+2. They have to take into account vehicle accuracy and their own accuracy....and some leniency.

I read Si's link in the first quote and all that grabbed my attention was this paragraph....

The cameras will be deployed along stretches of "smart motorways" to enforce variable speed limits when the hard shoulder is used as an additional lane at peak times.

Nothing there about the cameras staying on outside of variable limits - or where the hard shoulder is not used as an additional lane. Or whether they are enforcing the limits with no tollerances....

.....Sure the technology is there; but are we not over-reacting? I mean, what better way to get people to slow down than make them believe the cameras are active 24/7; irrespective of whether a lower limit is imposed or not!!

I stand by my earlier comments - I know (100% genuine cases - not hearsay) of a few people being flashed on the northern stretch of the M25, driving at over 90mph when the limit was not reduced from 70mph, who have not received an NIP. And those incidences were all over the last 4-6 weeks.... So, my question, who has or knows personally of anyone who received an NIP for exceeding 70mph - by anything from 2mph upwards - on the M25 et al, on the new "smart" motorways; by these HADECS cameras as per the theme of this thread. I shall disregard those so called "news" stories - I want to hear if you or anyone in your immediate circle has been prosecuted. And I repeat, I mean only where no lower limit (IE the normal 70mph applied) prevailed.

Just playing devil's advocate - hard facts only; no newspaper headlines, internet gossip, etc.... And the sweeping statement that "x hundred drivers caught" is of no relevance when the article does not specify exactly how fast (on average even) these motorists were driving; or stating what the prevailing limit(s) were at the time - since they could all have been snapped exceeding a 50mph limit:wink:

The original intention was to catch drivers speeding between variable speed gantries where there was no camera so further enforcing the current variable speed. But then I think there was a decision to leave them on at 70 when no variable speed was enforced. And from what I've been told 70 means 70

On another note Richard you posted a while ago about Julia greeting caught on the M42 section and I thought you said that that was very close to the limit then and not with the 10% +2 mph ?

They tend to park cars on the side of the road with a speed camera set up in it witch can turn up in any street or motor- way at anytime of the day. We call it revenue getting down under.

The intention has always (supposedly) been that mate - but we know the technology is still there just the same.... I am still of the thought that they won't always be on whilst there is no lower limit than 70; albeit the press are suggesting otherwise at the moment.

As for Julia getting caught, I think you have mistaken me for someone else - she has never driven on the M42 - or received a ticket for that matter! I did, however, say in this thread that "someone I know very well was flashed at over 90mph (apparently in a silver German sports car) by a HADECS on the Herts section of the M25" recently - but mentioned no names:wink: It was around 9pm on a bank holiday evening, very light traffic and in clear dry conditions. The normal 70mph limit applied - no NIP followed....

Hi Richard

Apologies if it wasn't Julia.....

Who the hell was it that posted that thread then ? Because they gave a warning that the usual tolerances didn't apply......

today I did a test as I was in no rush atall all day. so I drove round to do the things I had to do shopping looking at jobs ect I drove every were to the speed limit on the motorway in 40 zones and on 30 zones. the out come was abuse and cars up my arse non stop were ever I went people trying to make me go faster also got a few hand signals at me you know what I mean by that and some very angry drivers clearly cursing me try this for you self you have to do it all day and you will be shocked just how many people drive rite your arse and how angry people get with I have not done this test before was amazed by the out come no wonder most people speed

I try to stick to tbe speed limit (mmainly due to being s**t scared due to a car accident) and much of the time I get abuse too. People ae just impatient. It seems almoss illegal in south london to slow for a speed bump. In my previous car I had two guys in a beemer cut me up and threatening to kill me because I took it easy in the MR2 I had.

Drive at a pace you are happy with and dont let other drivers try to influnce you in speeding up mate. An advance driving instructer told me "its better to be in the front of your own queue rather than the end of someone else's."

yes it hard to stick to the limit when you get a load of abuse your rite its like its illegal to drive at the speed limit you cant win what ever you do

Yeah, certainly this month on my way back from Italy. I flew from Luton.
