You may read about the Highways agency putting in new speed cameras to catch motorists in an variable speed limit zone going speeding past a gantry where there isn't a camera

Well they are now active and set for exactly 70mph on the M6, M42, southern section of the M25 and today I've just seen one in action on the M1. It flashed as a guy on the other side went past , Seeing what they look like and and knowing what to look for it seems they are going to be on every gantry soon because the control box and wiring is being put in place on loads of gantries.... and obviously already live on some

You have been warned.

I'll stick to the A1 and go cross country !

Not least in Dorset it would appear:

http://www.dorsetecho.co.uk/news/11035973.Quick_learner_driver_gets_speeding_fine_____on_a_driving_lesson/

In that case the driver was offered a speed awarness course in line with ACPO guidelines. Was your 33mph man offered

a course rather than points?

Yup the same corse I did myself a few months prior, they love them and hand them out like sweets.

Not just the variable ones either the average speed cameras also get you. On the M60 ring road towards Stockport there are a set of cameras which are not for roadworks but for a bend in the motorway. I used to drive through at around 60mph no issues whatsoever and this was on a regular basis I then get collared doing 56mph and the limit is 50mph so gets pulled in GMP were not arsed if it was a few mph over and offered me either points SP50 or to take the course and a £100 fine which I took. Point is with all the road works etc don't just take the variable ones as the ones to watch.

Speedos inevitably, esp on New cars read about 3mph or so higher. So if you get booked at 77 you were likely doing a Speedo indicated 80 or more. We all break these laws and when you do your normally in full knowledge you've done it. Yeah its petty but its our choice to speed, just don't speed its quite clear really and if you do be a man about it and admit its your fault alone. Sometimes they are sneeky and that annoys me, but if the posted limit is 70 and your doing 80 why expect to not be caught? You are breaking the law at the end of the day wether the law is right or just isca seperate issue.

I don't think they were installed then.....

I only noticed them on Sunday for the first time Once you know what look for they're easy to spot - Grey box usually on the side of the Gantry with a what looks like a cctv camera attached or at the side of it but, which is, in fact an ANPR camera... Been talking with a guy who knows !

They're dead sneeky !

You can't do that to these. They're on the the motorway wide Gantries for Variable speed limits.

50 cal rifle should do the trick

Someone round this way has been towing them with a bit if chain I suspect so they are left taking photos of the sky, a lot more subtle. Be hilarious to see all the photos of seagulls turning up. They don't seem to be repairing or replacing them anymore, anyone else noticed that? There quickly fading out of existence being covered with those orange bags and not I. Use stamped over them, I heard it was because they no longer get any money from them.

A lot of local authorities are now starting to look at recomissioning them.

They're bloody worst in Dorset IMO! Those 'speed on green' cameras on that intersection in Poole after miles of national and 50mph speed limited that suddenly go 30 and then 'bam' there's the intersection!

That's about 10 minutes from my house, they've reverted back to a signal camera now due to public pressure. Loads of stupid changes recently, the main dual carriageway into bmth drops to 40 there was huge public out cry over it, so they just covered the camera up...they have also reduced the Dorset way to 50 for some unknown reason, it's mostly industrial and retail parks either side or open fields :s and boy oh boy do they enforce it, parking the scammer vans on the slip road so you can't see them till you have past. But it's ok because you will be virtually guaranteed to be offered the £110 education corse.

They are the people that have seen these new cameras in action

If you want get pedantic take a drive round the southern end of the M25.

We've had someone come into the office complaining the cameras are flashing like Christmas tree lights when there is no variaable speed limit set

You may not have experienced them but if your in Surrey drive around and take a look

There are (allegedly) Hadecs3 cameras on the northern section of the M25 in Herts/Essex too - where the variable limit ends (to the east of South Mims) and the hard shoulder has been removed. I know of several people (one very well...) who have been flashed at circa 90mph yet received no NIP.....

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

There are plenty in that list that needed a kick up the arsee never mind a fine:mad: some of those speeds over the limit are plain stupid imho.

Think you would need more facts before saying that really, they might have been booked at 5am or entering a 30 from a national etc as you know its not as clear andsimple as it always appears.

Half of those would have been sent to magistrates' court where mitigation is presented and fines are means tested.

Fair point, but still very inconsistent. Seems some places you get a slap on the wrists others a ban.

I dosnt disagree bri, as I said earlier if your going to break the law accept that you may get caught and not enjoy the result.

However driving through the center of town at 80mph in a 30 is obviously out or order, say you shot round a lorry midnight where a lane converges though so your squeezing it a touch it turns to 30 and oh look there's johnny copper sitting there cos its a great speed trap.your stuffed, your now entering a 30 limit at 80 your a fool but not necessarily a down right hooligan. It's a grey world and a few numbers doesn't tell a full story. Shit happens to good people, I'm not saying that's the case for all infact its likely the minority but I just try not to jump to the assumed fact. Were all guilty of being s moron at some point or another its human.

just out of interest try driving bang on 70mph on the motorway and just watch how many cars over take you its like 80% of them what does that tell you? most people speed just no one has the balls to admit it.

Yes indeed - speeding is an "absolute" offence.....

.....And that is also a good point. Is speeding always dangerous? And the answer "yes, because it's against the law" is not always right....

....Sure, anyone driving at 37mph past a school on a wet, dark Monday morning deserves having the book thrown at them. But 100mph+ on a clear, dry, empty motorway......? Be honest - and I don't mean typing it on an open internet forum - but admit it to yourselves; how many here have done that (and higher) on the public road, safely, when the opportunity arose?

Speed itself does not kill; it's inappropriate speed for the prevailing conditions that contributes to accidents. If high speeds are so dangerous, why are there still unrestricted sections of German autobahns?

We, here, all know this in our hearts; but the "speed kills" brigade has gotten to many a driver nowadays. That, along with many people having 6 points plus on their licences - oh, and those brainwashed into reducing their carbon footprint or saving fuel; has brought out a hitherto latent sanctimony in a vast number of drivers, who [now] never exceed 67mph.... Not to mention the domino effect of high-profile stories in the press and on the 'web about speed cameras on every motorway; snapping anyone and everyone driving at 72mph.

As Dan says, most people on the motorway exceed 70mph as and when it's safe to do so. And whilst these "stealth" cameras might capture all such hardened criminals, are NIPs REALLY issued to each and every one? I doubt it - there are still ACPO guidelines; and many forces also [loosely] accept the "85th percentile" rule, where the safest speed on any road is deemed that at which 85% of the traffic travels along it.... I agree, not an exact science or permitted margin of error - but then again, no more or less credible than stories in the press about each and every driver caught at 72mph on the M25 being prosecuted....!!

There are indeed more cameras; meaning more chances of getting caught. But drive sensibly, safely, observing the prevailing conditions (and keep an eye out for the odd stealthy speed trap); and you'll reduce the chance of getting a ticket. Mind how you go....

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Couldn't agree more Richard, morality and legality are far from the same that's a fact many people have forgotten. I think it's quite possible though that we've become too safe, too soft and too complacent. Let's face it despite the constant cries that driving is highly dangerous and it kills more people than aliens and coconuts combined each year we all do it everyday pretty harmlessly.

I drive a lot of miles for work and cover all kinds of roads, the main without a doubt cause of accidents I see is stupidity and ignorance. Speed may be a factor because it amplifies the situation but the route cause is normally stupidity.

For example sonething I see as a near miss regularly on motorways, your driving down the middle lane, indicate and pull out into the outside lane suddenly there's a car there honking or crashing into you. That's his fault because he was coming down the outside lane at 85 right? No, it's your fault because you didn't follow the very first thing you were taught, mirror, signal and manorve the mirror ie looking was left out and the signal manoeuvre was one thing, it's lazy and it's dangerous but so many do it. Buses do this a lot, just because you are indicating doesn't mean you can go, it might not be safe you must check...

We are all human we all make mistakes, it's that human error that causes the issue. Speed doesn't kill, neither do guns or even nuclear war heads what kills is the inevitable stupidity of a human being or three. We are all quick to point out that x person is a criminal or y person is an idiot but many of us are nearly critical enough of our actions that could end up in the same scenario. Sod the speed kills campaign or the drink drive campaign we only need one "don't be a silly **** and do that thing that's obviously a crap idea" campaign. I Spose you could shorten it down to a more PC "take time to think" or "think more".

One day I hope society as a whole will come back from the finger pointing to the don't be a bellend stance and law with it.

lot of people on here take the moral high ground about speeding and how they don't do it. when we all know 90% on here do it. a bit ironic having a performance car on a forum about performance cars you got a performance car to use its performance. think we need to face facts here the cameras are here due to us speeding we all do it if we didn't the cameras wouldn't be here in the first place. I agree there is a time and place to get ye foot down. in 30mph zone is a stupid for sure. but on the empty motorway were you can see miles down the road well..... foot down isn't it
