I've had these wheels for over a year now & want to get them refurbed as soon as I get back from my holiday. I've read a lot of companies won't touch split rim alloys so gona do it myself & need some advice. I've already split the front faces of the wheel off which are gona be sent off to be powder coated. When I put the face back on do i need to use any seal or just bolt it up? I've got some thread lock to use on the bolts.

Also, as I havnt removed the rim it won't affect the tyre holding air will it? I wouldn't want to get them built back up to find out they've gota be taken apart again.

I've been searching previous posts on the forum but just got more confused by it all so any advice is appreciated.

Really? Even though I'm only splitting the front face? Didn't think it'd be too hard doing it that way, just need to torque the bolts back up correctly. All the wheels have brand new tyres on so don't wana take the them off.

Are yours 2 or 3 piece wheels? Looks like they're 2-piece? If they are, they won't need any form of seal. My last set of split-rim wheels I had done by a chap in Nottingham who did an incredible job!

I'm not sure Si. I thought they were 2 but looking online I've seen a few people mention they're 3 piece. I'll keep you posted on how it goes Trev, hopefully the hardest bit is taking them apart.

Easiest way to tell mate; when you undid all the bolts, were you left with a wheel face and a barrel or a wheel face, an inner and an outer barrel? Some 2-peice barrels are seam welded to create a single. Go and have a look.

Actually, looking at the wheel, I see you still have the tyre mounted! Good job they were 2-piece or 2-piece welded else that tyre would be as flat as a pancake.

Would have thought if they are 3 piece the tyre would of deflated when you unbolted them.

Ok, I'll have to check next week as I'm in Lanzarote at the moment.

If you are on Facebook then search for 'Wheels by cardhore'. He is well known in mr2 circles for his split rim refurbs.

Here is just one example of his work, guys name is James.

Those wheels are 2 piece. The barrels would have popped off and hit you in the face if they'd been true 3-piece!!!

Looking at the pics, look like 3 piece as you can see the front and rear rim join.

In that case, they must be well stuck together and you have been very lucky they have not burst apart under pressure, as Si mentioned, if you haven't deflated them before you took the center out?

Nope three piece :p

They wouldn't be!! The barrels with no fasteners on would not hold the tyre at pressure. If they are described as 3-piece they are probably welded 3-piece as I described above. :)

Maybe mate. Tom will soon find out when he starts work on them.

If they were originally forged as a 3-piece set, then the outer and inner barrels would definitely have been welded like this effectively turning them into 2-piece wheels. If they were true 3-piece construction, that tyre would not be where it is in the photo. :)

This is the barrel from one of my old Advan Siena wheels.

If they're 3 piece then I'll probably get a professional to do them, I'll do them myself if they're 2 piece.

Thanks Daffy, I'll give that guy on facebook a message & see what price he charges.

Still need to decide on colour. Polished lip & maybe black chrome centres? Or stick with silver? Think anything too dark might make the wheel look smaller as they're only 17"

Whys that? As long as it's done properly I can't see why there would be an issue? My mate has rebuilt at least two sets of BBS split runs like that on the kitchen table lol.

My equips are 3 piece and the adhesive sealant used to seal them was nuts I couldn't physically split them without a tyre fitting machine, so they probably would stay together even under tyre pressure.

I put mine back together with a clear silicon sealant and worked a treat!

Thanks Stephen that will come in handy. Spoke to the wheel guy on Facebook, he doesn't do wheels any more but he said he thinks they are 2 piece. Gona have a gud look when I get home.

I had two sets of wheels refurbished by James. Set of 3 piece Work Meister S1 and a set of Desmond Regamaster, both came out awesome and cannot fault him one bit.

But unfortunately he is now focusing is another business so wheels have be put on hold.
