Thought I'd ask on here before ringing my insurance as I know a few members have owned them before.

As the title states, does anyone know if these cars are insurable on a classic policy?

I only ask a I need something with a bit more space than my zed but also want something a bit fun as well.

The only issue I've got is that I've been on a classic policy for so long as my daily drive that my ncb has all expired so even shitty modern cars cost a fortune to insure.

Any help or advice would be great fully received.

Depending on the car's age, some insurers might do it - although be careful about using a "classic insured" car as a daily driver!! I believe most classic insurers would expect you to have another car for daily use on a regular policy.....

....With the motor insurance database, it is easy for them to check now. They probably won't though - unless you ever have to make a claim....:nono:

Cheers for the concern richard but I did tell my insurance company that I use it as a daily driver so I know I'm covered should the worst happen

If I were you I'd read my policy conditions very carefully. As Richard says it's rare for a classic policy to cover you for travelling to and from work and also for carrying goods or tools for work. You should be looking for what is written and not assuming it's OK because it's not written. This is only how I interpret my own insurance policies but you need to be vary careful with a classic. I feel that if you are a working man with a Stagea which you use for work then you should have full insurance. You may also find that your classic should be a car in secondary use to your main car once again as Richard has stated.

When insuring a classic I've found it best to use a broker and divulge full details rather than an internet site who maybe don't ask the correct questions. I know there are big savings to be made on your annual policy but if the worst happens they'll drop you like a brick.

I just had to cancel my insurance with lancaster because they wouldnt allow my 300zx to be my main car. Im now with Adrian Flux; unlimited mileage, can drive to work/be main car etc for £700. Do be careful with insurance because they will look for any excuse to not pay out. Lancaster annoyed me because when I rang up to check about the car being my main car, she cancelled the policy straight away then told me the cancellation fee was £278!!!! The years policy was only £320. I complained and said "no wonder people cheat insurance companies, because here i am being honest and i get smacked in the face!". She talked to her supervisor and put me on hold for 18mins. when she came back, she said the cancellation fee would be £60... makes you wonder how many people have been cheated by a huge cancellation fee. Moral of the story: dont use Lancaster and dont accept the cancellation fee...

I'm. Insured with classic line and my policy states for social and commuting as that's what I asked for, been with them for years now as they are fantastic, I'm insured to use daily for social and commuting and they don't mind that its parked on the driveway all with 5000 miles a year (barely even manage that) at around £400 a year. Highly recommended company in my eyes.

I'm only trying to be helpful here and not critical. I see it appears your insurance co. has 'classic' in its name but are you sure you have a classic car policy?. Whilst I appreciate all peoples circumstances are different your fee seems quite high for a classic car policy plus you say you have forfeited your NCB. I haven't owned a 300zx for some years now but I don't think I paid that much for a normal policy. My classics insurances are considerably less.

My classic car insurance with Lancaster was £320 and Im 29. it limited so many things such as no NCB earning, no commuting to work, no euro cover, limited mileage, it was pretty useless to be honest. £400 does seem a bit steep for your classic insurance but all depends on age/driving experience/points/postcode etc. Ive been driving 12 years and never had an accident or point *touch wood*

My adrian flux policy is a "normal policy" with NCB earning, european cover, drive other cars on 3rd party, etc. and that was £700.

My classic car insurance for 5000 Miles.Yearly! £149 :)

So as Arkwright says seems expensive, to me too!

Maybe I'm not on a classic policy then, I'm going to have to check my paper work to get to the bottom of it, just assumed it was as I haven't accrued any ncb.

To be fair my policy is a bit more than it has been for the last couple of years but just put that down to prices going up.

I do however still have a claim on my record due to a thieving **** nicking my old saph, but all my points have now gone (strange I get no points from driving my zed but got caught 10mph over the limit in a transit :) ).

Hi,

Please feel free to give us a try for insurance if you like. If you wanted to PM me some contact details I'd be happy to arrange for one of my quotes team to give you a call back.

Regards,

Dan.

Damn bad luck there mate...... Was it on a "national speed limit" road by chance? I guess you already know that in a Transit the limits are actually 10mph below those for a car - IE 50mph on a single and 60mph on a dual carriageway when driving any non-car derived van!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

How long have you been on the classic policy? A lot of companies will ate NcB that's expired within 2 years. Could be worth speaking to some high street brokers and seeing if they'd accept longer if you can prove you've still had a good history (no incidents on the classic policy). It will most likely come down to individual companies as its their commercial right to deem what they will and won't accept.

Most don't know this till some jobs worth books them, equally many don't realise that the old car derived van exemption is no longer golden and the gross payload is now relivent. Laws change regularly and you don't get a memo of this till it's too late.

Yup - load up to 2 tonnes max laden weight; but it also specifically must still be a "car derived" van to travel at 60mph on a single and 70mph on a dual carriageway...... If the max laden weight (including that of the vehicle itself) exceeds 2 tonnes, it is no longer a car derived van....

To answer rich, yes it was on a national speed limit road, I pulled on at speed and was at 70 pretty much straight away with the police in the rear view, I stayed at that speed all the way and then got pulled over 10 miles later. This said to me (which I stupidly said to the coppa) that he must have been speeding to catch up with me. I also stupidly said as there was only cop that surely he couldn't prove anything as it was his word against the 3 of us in the van.

I think the lesson to learn is not to be a cheeky c#*t.

To answer birds question.

I have been on a classic policy now for nearly 4 years as a daily driver so I reckon there is no chance of getting my ncb back now.
