Went and had a look at a 300zx today and had a good nose underneath, looked pretty rusty and I am sure the chassis looked twisted...anyway, just so I know what to expect when I look under these cars in terms of typically what rust I might expect to see, where, etc anyone got a few photos of their cars underneath? Set me a precedent for what I should be looking for.

Ta very muchly in advance :w00t:

You want to be looking at the the rear sill, all the sill seams for poor jack placement. Some parts of the floor pan can get a bit rotten around the footwells.

Look around the suspension turrets in the engine bay too.

Skylines used to suffer the suspension turret rust issues also - I saw in the rear arch this today even without going under the car...you can only imagine what the underside looked like.

I had a small piece of rust there which i cut out, but that looks hell man.

I would get under than a give it a good looking over as that pretty bad mate.

Is this yours or are you yet to purchase it? if so body mech in notts are doing pretty awesome sill repairs.

Had a look at it today, its on ebay and auto trader, it wasn't that far away so thought I would have a look - definite no though, so much more of that on the car.

I need to take some of mine as it's semi-concourse underneath. ZERO rust and clean surfaces. I clean under the car when I get it on the ramp and it doesn't get used in shit weather/wet.

^^^Yeh, can imagine that took an hour or two! Very nice.

As for the OP's 1st pic, when I went Z viewing this was a common site, I even specifically asked the sellers over the phone about rust in this area, they all lie, let you drive half way across the country to find out. As soon as I saw stuff like this the car was disregarded and the hunt continued.

Thanks guys, was hoping to see some not so immaculate views as well as the immaculate ones!

Yes was annoyed at that, I asked him if it had any serious signs of rust and he said no. Fortunately it was only a 35 min drive and I very quickly scratched it off the list.

Prob your best bet is if your serious to sub up and keep eye out on here for someone selling as you have more chance of picking up a nice example thats been loved and possibly already had the usual sills etc done depend what your looking for project or usable straight off and budget as possibly one idea would be to pick one up that has good engine etc but needs underside done and sending it to bodymech for whatever it needs plus a respray :) just depends on budget though.
