I'm looking to get some paint for my car. Where's best to get it?

The car is black GL1. I've been told to get 2K paint and that I won't need a clear coat

Brown Brothers. They are the main agents/importers/stockists for PPG which are the best paint manufacturer. Just give them the code.

....if GL1 is solid (I can't remember now without referring), then no you don't really need clear coat, but it's best to use one anyway...and you'll need one if you're only to spray in water-based.

As for 2k supply, that's a little tricker. 2k is still used in North America, so it's still available, but it has been banned in this country. They might still be able to get it for you.

If you go for water-based, then the clear coat is 2k.....strange laws, but that's how it is!

2k banned, really? I had mine sprayed in 2K recently and no mention of anything from the bodyshop. The paint itself doesnt contain carcinogenics apparently its the hardener for the paint which does.

Any paint supplier can sort you out, and 2k is still widely used in this country and has never been banned

Dont talk silly. I bought some last week locally KH3 blue

There are hundreds of Ebay listings..................like this....

I was told by my bodyshop 3 years ago that 2k was being banned? I think it was something to do with one of the additives... maybe? lol

I think there trying to stop solvent basecoat, and using waterbase but they still use a 2k clear,

But you can still buy it from suppliers...

As Terry says. 2k clear coat is likely to stay 2k for the foreseeable future, waterbased is too soft and never fully cures, so always has to have a 2k clear on top to protect it. AFAIK, there are ways around getting 2k base. I think if you're a non-paint shop, you can buy for personal use. Pearl paints will use a waterbased base, with a 2k pearl coat and a 2k clear coat; metallic paints aren't actually 'metallic' anymore like they were in 2k base coats, they're now ground plastic particulates.

TBH, waterbased paints don't react like 2k paints, so often, it can be safer to paint on top of panels that you're unsure of. The real issue with waterbased is that it's hard to correct midway through painting.

There are exemptions to these laws currently in place Simon. Mine was painted in 2k base and 2k clear by an approved bodyshop fully authorised to do so. They're allowed within the scope of specific types of business use and from what I have seen, a very large percentage of paint shops have this exemption granted and still use it.

So why do I not have to use a clear coat if using 2K? Is it just because it should look good anyway?

Thanks Joel. I did know there was some funny law, but couldn't remember the full scope.

Lee, 2k has a hardener in it (added just before application) which makes the paint durable. The water based base coat does not. There's no activator/hardener in it, so effectively, it never fully cures. If you lay 2k clear on top of it, it creates a durable barrier.

So why do I not have to use a clear coat if using 2K? Is it just because it should look good anyway?

Your colour you might have a choice of single stage which has the clear allready in the paint and the hardner mixes in this to activate it or a base and clear where you paint a basecoat with no hardner and then the clear coat with hardner goes over that to protect it,

Mine was painted several times in merc artic white single stage so it does not need clear coat,

Lots of colours like plain non metallic blacks come in single stage,

The only thing i found with the single stage white was its the the same White they used on merc sprinter vans and they go dull and loose there shine after a while but you can polish it back...

The merc cars in artic white dont go dull and i think its because you get the choice to do it in single or base and clear and i think the cars are base and clear...

I really liked that single stage on my car because he put a few heavy coats on and we could flat the pants out of it and polish it up and it use to look the nuts, where we painted it in a workshop not an oven we got some s@#t in it so it suited us better,

This time I've had mine painted in suzuka grey pearl its a type of pearl white and it was done in base and clear and it seems to keep that new car white look where it just looks whiter and shiner but the painter made it look s@#t...

Also if your painting it yourself, the hardner which u mix in is nasty stuff, has isocyanate in it which is not very good for you...

Your ment to have an air fed mask but should be ok with a mask which is suited to isocyanate i bought a gerson one from ebay for about £20, also use a white paper suit and plastic gloves.

But the mask i think 3m use to say there ok but now they say there not safe for isocyanate so how safe the mask actually are i don't know,

And probably depending how u fit them to your face and make a seal helps too...
