"You picked a fine time to leave me, Loose Wheel!" - Mondo's new Zed.

Yesterday saw me head down to Kent to pick up my new Shortie! :D I got on the motorway to come back home about 4pm.

At 9pm, I was safely tucked away... on the hard shoulder of the A1(M) near York with a grand total of 1 wheelnut holding my rear passenger wheel on!!! The other 4 studs decided to shear off while I was in the outside lane - there was an almighty bang, the back-end of the car went completely loose so I had no choice but to dive for the shoulder! :(

The recovery truck arrived at 11pm and I slowly edged my new tripod onto the flatbed, before we headed off back to mine.

Spoke to Mr F this morning and he's ordered me 10 new rear studs, so my new car is currently undrivable. Seems it had cheap slot-on spacers on the back, no spigot rings and the end result was 4 wheelstuds missing.

Gotta love Zeds, eh...?!

Honestly? I think it looks fantastic, but I think I'd have gone for a charcoal leather on the outers rather than a red leather.

Nah, not for me. My opinion for my own car is that two-tone seats are a bit fussy, which is why I spent so long finding a shade of Alcantara to match the leather. :)

I think there's enough of a contrast with all the dark plastics without needing to darken the seats as well. Plus all the silver paintwork helps the seats and trim to "pop out".

Unless the interior's in full sunlight, it's quite a dark leather anyway. It's only when the sun hits it that it really stands out. So subtle and eye-catching in one package. :)

This morning... indicators modded! Big orange bowl now gone, insides tinted black and they look much better now! Thanks go to FunkySi for the idea in the first place :)

And all spats now refitted too. Much nicer to see the proper shape at the back end now - YAY for proper Shortie rear spats!!

The fog lights are slightly harder, especially with masking and removing the clear tabs (without breaking)! Chuffed that people are using my ideas. :)

Not sure if I'm going to do the foglights or not... it's certainly not a priority at the moment.

But the indicators idea was certainly a good one Si, and that's why I "borrowed" it... :thumbup1:

Mondo, please rate the bonnet stut kit out of 10 for us. Were there any problems fitting this kit, any clearance or interference issues?

No exactly cheap for what it is, but if the qualities there it can be worth the extra.

Thanks....

One rating coming up :)

It took about 30 minutes to install, nothing required any fettling or modding whatsoever - all the holes lined up perfectly. New bolts and everything included.

The gas struts aren't quite strong enough individually to hold the bonnet open, but both together provide no issues.

No clearance issues or anything like that. Just a proper, simple "plug'n'play" kit.

10/10 from me! :thumbup1:

It cost just shy of £130 delivered. I got the black brackets and then sprayed them to match the car.

There's probably better things I could've spent £130 on, but I really hate seeing the normal bonnet stay!

I haven't sent those check valves, by the way - the ones I bought initially didn't stop the leaky washer, so I got another type which seem to have done the trick. I'll send you the link if they work as they're supposed to, mate :)

I'm with Mondo on the interior, whilst I have reservations about the red, I think contrasting outers is not the way forward, I prefer a single colour scheme for the seats [emoji106]

Regarding the bonnet struts, when the bonnet is being shut and or latched shut with the struts are fully retracted, do they seem to exert much pressure on the bonnet? I would worry that they could potentially deform the bonnet over time?

My red seats are lovely. End of! :thumbup1:

Regarding the bonnet struts: each one on it's own won't support the bonnet alone... both together, there's resistance when closing but not so much that you have to overly force it. I don't foresee any issues, but I'd already made a mental note to keep an eye on things... just in case....

I like the bonnet struts Great Mondo, Mark Derby has some and I perused them at great length at JAE a couple of years ago, I thought they were a great bit of kit.

Your battery although clearly fits is the wrong one which is interesting, as when I went to see coopd's car a couple of weeks ago, he had the very same halfords battery and he proceeded to inform me that it is the one stated in their books/database for the 300ZX, wonder if the same as happened to you or the cars owner at the time.

  • Author

They're definitely a good bit of kit, Andy. They also open the bonnet a fair bit more than the standard brace does too :)

The battery is definitely the wrong one for the car. The terminals are at the front, rather than the back. It's on the list but, as it's not causing me any issues (other than aesthetic ones), it'll stay where it is for the time being.

Next job (when I can bring myself to do it) is to fit the dual MAFs, the Selin translator and the new Apexi filters!

That would be this morning then!

All fitted - took maybe an hour at most. Absolutely plug'n'play and no issues on start up. :)

The new Apexi filters should help things along (genuine ones as well) and I'll report on what difference it makes once I've actually been somewhere... maybe this afternoon if the weather holds off here.

is this the new gen 2 model ?

just looking at the gen 1 in z1 over in the us. says you need to map the car to get the most out of it. or you can pic add mode with out remap

  • Author

According to what I've read, the "AVG" setting is for ECUs that are programmed to recognise a dual intake, whereas the "ADD" mode is for those that only recognise a single intake.

So my Selin's set on "ADD" which (all being well) will be fine :)

i see now. so you can flip it when you get a car remapped. were did you get your filters from ?

Ok this has got to stop now :nono: What is it with all you Simon's on the forum continuously updating your Z's and making the rest of us feel bad about ours.

Ha ha just joking Mondo and FunkySi great work and real credit to have you both on the forum  Keep it up guys and hopefully I will get to see both Z's soon.

^^^Ha! Believe me, there won't be many (if any) updates from me for a while now... the bank balance reads pretty much zero after all of this!

Once you've started its hard to stop lol mine is pretty much standard but with the new radiator and chrome bracket it has started me thinking of more chrome :surrender:

It's easy for me to stop getting presents for my Zed when people and companies want actual physical money for them!

The only things I'm planning on now is to have the Hicas arms and joints replaced as one of them was an advisory on the last MOT, retrim the steering wheel at some point, and to get this spare set of brake calipers rebuilt.

I honestly had no intentions of going dual MAF or anything like that until Josh posted it for sale without any delivery or import charges. Just couldn't pass it up!

Woe betide me if a set of 555 injectors appear at a nice price though... :w00t:

I must confess, I didn't know it had any LEDs for monitoring - might have to whip the nose panel off and have a look!

Good to know it's the updated version though :thumbup1:

We've had a nice little run out this afternoon to see the in-laws for Father's Day and I can confirm that the Selin does make a difference!

Pick-up is noticably quicker and more immediate - I'm genuinely surprised by the difference it's made! The car's much more responsive to drive now :)

An expensive modification? Yes. Worth it...? Hell yes!!
