For as long as I can remember I would never trust my brakes in an emergency stop situation.

Sat in the car with the engine off I can press the brake pedal a couple of times and it goes hard.

Engine running, the same - although if I apply more pressure I can get the pedal to travel to the floor.

Driving, the same - I can get the pedal to the floor, the car does brake quite quickly but feel there could be more if the pedal wasn't travelling to the floor so easily.

Since having this problem I have changed discs and pads front and rear, changed to braided lines and swapped the master cylinder, and bled numerous times with a the help of an assistant. I am thinking possibly it could be the servo?? What else is there?

Any other vehicle I drive and attempt to push the pedal to the floor the vehicle has already done an emergency stop.

Cheers, Dan

poor job your cheeky ****er I didn't not cut any corners all part are work to there max I think its just a case od being used to top notch brakes then driving the 300 you relise just out dated and garbage the brakes are

Ok Dan I have been watching this thread very carefully and everybody has an opinion and a right to voice there opinion but no need to swear at another member please. Keep it clean we all love a lively debate but dont get personal. Now enjoy the rest of the thread and for the record my brakes are good in the 300zx but I don't do heavy braking as I can read the road ahead and slow down in time in any car.

gary that's fine but when some clown saying you have done a bad job and has not idea even seen the work I have done on my car then I have the rite to tell him to back down. if you drive the z like I drive my van then yes the brakes are just fine but for big heavy car like the z there just no good. all I can say is unless you have owned a track bread race car for the road like the lotus then you really have no idea just what good braking is. I was once myself was like that till I owned a balls out race car then you realise just how lame the 300zx are. there are to many people on here living in a fantasy world over the z with the constant thing with z prices think there car is worth loads it really does not matter its a cheap jap fun banger and wont face the fact the brakes are lame and dated and cant want to get rid of mine. my be I am a little harsh here but having had proper brakes you just don't realise it people are so funny on here some times I have to laugh

....what was it you were telling me last week.....?

am not sensitive at all

Why have you got a 300zx again? You must remember you're on an enthusiast site, so calling them 'lame' and 'old banger' will probably rub a lot of people up the wrong way. I have no idea why you're on this forum. Your comments are pretty much always negative, you rarely add any technical input, you rub people's backs up (I do this too - but at least I am an enthusiast), your car seems to be in a constant state of rebuild yet you always brag about wanting to drive it in all weathers and thrash the shit out of it. One minute you say the car is an old banger and lame, the next, you're posting up photos of a quite meticulous rear subframe rebuilt.

You just make no sense.

no the brakes si I ment not the car

Well, I am sure your days are numbered! I've been on here nearly 10 years, you're still wet behind the ears!

...and yes you ARE negative!

still banned tho wasn't you lol am wet coming from you lololololololololol

the prob with this site is you cant say a bad thing about the z if you do your shot down for it

But all you do is slate the car. This is an enthusiast forum, so constantly blabbing about how much of an old worthless banger it is, saying the brakes and crap, saying the suspension is crap and everything else.....just is pretty shitty.

Why don't you go back to driving your Elise and Porsche since they are obviously so much better than this old Japanese banger..

You are taking it to personal Dan. I know JP and he is no clown he has a vast knowledge of these cars (as do you) Have a break chill out calm down and come back a better person. I have been called lots of names and sworn at in the past by people who think they have the right to do so but where are they now? I wont let any member be bullied so please Dan stop and stop now and start enjoying the forum and agree to disagree on subjects that dont go your way and move on with respect for your posts instead of condemnation.

if he saying i have done a bad job then i have the rite to say something about it gary as am sure you realise by now and no push over and will stand up for my self

Dan I am NOT obsessed with the value of the car!! Plus, so what I was??? There is a very valid reason to know the values of them and it is a source of interest for about 75% of the owner base. There's far more to a retro classic than 'beating the shit out of it' as you so eloquently put it.

Calling them a banger isn't really funny, nor is it clever.

i rebuilt mine new seals and pistons new master cylinder dab discs with halk pads all to notch stuff . and there still crap am sure there out dated FACT. THERE CRAP the worse brakes I have had on any of my cars times have moved on and now there there are much better brakes around

Mate, my point was that posts like "300zx brakes are crap" does not help toe OP who is looking for a solution. Z32 brakes were certainly not crap when the car was new; and stopping distances were more than comparable to similar performance cars of the time - including the Supra Mk3 and 4, Mitsi 3000gt, Porsche 944/968/928 and more.

Sure, big brake upgrades will be a major benefit; but for someone not willing or able to spend £1000 on an upgrade, you can achieve very good results by fitting (professionally) refurb'ed callipers from the likes of Bigg Red etc. and aftermarket OEM replacement discs/pads made by Brembo for less than £500 all in. I agree that braking systems have moved on in 25 years - but the OEM set up, IF working as Nissan intended is more than up to the job of hauling the car to a stop; even when compared to similar powered/weighted high performance cars today.

Maybe you have just had a bad experience with yours - as many members drive modern high performance cars too - so are more than qualified to say that not all ZX brakes are rubbish in comparison!

Richard:cool:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

you want an expensive car go buy a Porsche. all am saying it the value now should not matter what so ever long you like the car. just to recap for any one else reading this I have rebuilt front and rear calliper new seals and pistons new mast cylinder with brace uprated dba discs and hawk pads new fluid the system is working as ist should be but I still don't think the brake are very good that's the only point am making.

if he saying i have done a bad job then i have the rite to say something about it gary as am sure you realise by now and no push over and will stand up for my self

No one treats you like a push over Dan and you have the right to stand up for yourself all I am saying is you don't need to swear at members or call them names. Has anyone sworn at you or called you a clown?

Nothing wrong with standard brakes in good order, my original 300 had them and I used to out-brake my mate in his Porsche Cayman at Llandow. Guess it has a lot to do with driver ability aswell.

My second 300 had D2 big brakes and there wasn't much difference to be honest.

OFF TOPIC: Richard I have emailed you, are you still picking up emails going to your 300zx.co.uk address?

am not negative let me think wasn't you once banned of this site for rubbing people up the wrong way so you one to talk about that arnt you :2guns::2guns:

I've been trying to get banned for years by rubbing people, but they just keep laughing at me :x:

On a serious note back to the actual issue. I remember reading an old thread the other day about the brake pedal sqeeking/squeeling and it was something to do with air squeezing out somewhere or other. It was fixed and apparently the brakes were brilliant after. Might be worth checking over all the pipework in case one is split or something

That is a key point that is often overlooked. The stock brakes should be more than capable of locking up or activating the abs when in good order. Installing updated brakes won't make any difference to the braking ability or stopping distance, it will only dissipate the heat more efficiently and keep them on form for longer.

In actual fact, if you search for a thread made by Jeff a few years back, bigger brakes can actually decrease braking performance by confusing the abs system. It has a well written, layman's description of how it affects the system. I'll try and dig it out later.
