I was told by a client today that using supermarket fuel is not recommended as it "watered" down as he put it - possibly to keep costs down.

Is there some truth to this?

I only use Tesco super as this is the only 99RON fuel around where I live for the Zed, but if there is more to this, then maybe I need to change.

He apparently was told this by a dealership, as the supermarket fuel can cause issues with catalytic converters and other post-combustion parts.

Anyone shed any thoughts on this?

Done many thousands of very hard miles on Tesco Momentum 99, it's a great fuel. Shell V Power has more knock resistance I've found though.

Me too!

I have heard this said - especially in the early days when supermarkets started to sell fuel.... It could have been a simple attempt by the big retailers though; simply to discredit the supermarkets, who were (and still are) selling fuel at lower prices....

I doubt it is true though; trading standards would have cottoned on by now - even in the face of the powers supermarkets seem to wield nowadays. Plus the fact that pretty much all our fuel comes from the same small number of refineries. However if there is any truth to be found in such rumours, it is more likely that the big brands like Shell, BP, Esso and Texaco simply put more additives for cleaning engines, improving performance, combustion, etc. into their fuels prior to delivery to the filling stations; as opposed to supermarkets "watering down" the fuel....

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

watering down with what though....Anything other than water and thats just silly would actually be more expensive than Petrol as the raw product is less expensive than water anyway before Westminster gets there hands on it:censored:

I run mine mainly on vpower only because tesco is further away from home than the shell garage and i pass 3 shell garages on the way too and from work. I have run on momentum in the past with no obvious issues.

On another note though i used to put sainsburys diesel in my estate for around 6 months untill it started running like a bag of crap.

Changed to bp or esso and improved massively. On doing some research i found that some supermarkets blend their diesel with biofuel which i know from bitter experience is not compatible with my hdi engine.

Supermarket fuel has to meet British Standards, as previously stated not as many additives put in supermarket fuel, you could always alternate between a branded fuel and supermarket fuel.

I always add a bottle of Coke to every tank of supermarket fuel. That gives it some fizz

I think Tesco were fined millions for this a few years ago after it was proven and had several law suits against them which meant paying out to customers who had expensive defects caused by the so called dilution.

I very much doubt it'll happen again and from what I've read in fuel reviews and testing, the momentum fuel available in Tesco always comes top.

"It was revealed yesterday that average petrol prices edged up following the fuel scare,

from 88.03p at the end of last week to 88.32p a litre."

Ah, those were the days!
