Having a few issues with the gearbox. It's a bit clunky when going into 2nd plus when I need to change down the gear stick will sometimes judder as if it's trying to jump out of gear. I don't know whether to get this box reconditioned or chance buying a used one & hoping its good. Has anyone had a box reconditioned? Was it expensive?

I think there is some kind of bush on the stick that can wear and if so give similar symptoms.. try that first as it st he cheapest option...

have a search on the forum as I think there are a few threads on it.

good luck.

Hi tom

I got a quote recently from a place in liverpool for a refurb on mine

It was a couple of options to either diagnose and fix just what was wrong only which was obviously dependant on what was found to be wrong. However they quoted me £350 ish plus vat for all new bearings and seals inc labour , bit of a wedge but it had a 12 month warrenty as well so maybe worth it to know its all done.

Thanks for the info Ian. That's a good price, it's what a second hand box would cost anyway. what's the name of the company? Do they remove & refit the box aswel or not?

Before you go off getting all that done, get the gear selector bushes replaced and change the gearbox fluid. Use MT90. That'll run you about £50 and will be cheaper than getting a box reconditioned that you may not need to. Sounds like 2nd gear syncros are a little worn though, but if your gear stick is like a dick in a bucket, that won't help either.

You can change those bushes with the box in situee as well btw, it's fiddly but it's more pleasant than removing the box.

I just replaced them bushes before I fitted the box there are 2 to change very simple. si is the mt90 fully or semi Synthetic. was told by jimmer to use semi ?

I'll change the bushes first then & see what difference it makes. Where's the best place to get them?

The gearbox oil was changed earlier this year & it's still topped up ok.

the ones I removed were fine not worn atall I was just being fussy will have a look if I still have them you can try them see if theres a change if you call up my car is in bits so can show you were they are

What oil was used in the gearbox?

As for the bushes, MJP if you want stock ones, if you want bronze ones, try Z1. Nothing wrong with the stock ones though.

Thanks Si, not sure what type of oil was used but can find out.

5 banana skins we used to cram into our gearboxes via the gear selector top...made them much silkier and silent. This was on MKII cortinas in the early 80,s though before all this fancy Nissan stuff:w00t:

Went to garage and had a look at a bottle of MT90 I have and sticker on bottle says:

"Red Line MT-90 is a fully synthetic ester-based lubricant ......."
