Tyre damage.

With my numberplate being legally cheeky, I was checking my tyres to make sure I was well prepared for a roadside discussion with the fuzz when I saw this.

:( what is going on there? Have I run over a beer can? I wouldn't be happy to continue driving with a back tyre like that!

Looks like it hasn't gone as far as the lowest part of the tread. I'd probably change them anyway though, but I don't think they're dangerous.

I know :/ difficult one, it isn't tyre wear is it, it's damage from something like a bit of metal? I can't rember anything, I avoid cans etc, with it being a back wheel it would have clattered on the underside whatever it was.

I don't really have the money but if it blew out I'd be kicking myself. Bugger.

More thoughts guys, wait or change?

Yeah, probably run over something that's just damaged the tread not the tyre shell. What's your current tread gauge say? Looks like you're 2/3s to 3/4 worn as it is. You could always buy some good part-worns.

They are all above the wear markers, the fronts are cracking and one of them has been bitten by the arch (not by me) I was gonna get a pair of vredestein ultrac vertis on the front, but two rears too would be too much.

Yeah  I know, I will wait a while on the rears, swap them side to side as the inside is wearing a bit quicker than the outside. But I hate cracked tyres, they've gone off quite quickly those fronts.

get em sorted mate there asking for trouble

For years i fannied around buying 4 and 5mm part worns, just buying what they had in and it's false economy or a quick fix.

You know when you buy new they are exactly that, you need good rubber and as said don't scrimp.

I got 2 rears which i love and are vredestein ultrac sessanta's and new fronts which are a less well know but with good reviews Nokians and don't regret for one moment the £340.00 I paid for all four.

Tbh even budjets would be better than driving round with cracked tyres or ones with visible defects. Part works are a minefield, so be careful, they are usually off a car for good reason rsp in this day and age, which means you are likely buying off a wrecked car or they are below the markers but still legal.

The Verdenstuens or whatever they are called are well praised and very well priced. I've got a pair of Achilles ATR sport in 265/35/18r which cost me £150 yes for the pair lol, yes new. They're pretty good comparable to say falkens and very similar to look at, they arnt going to be best but in dry weather they're better than ok, certainly better than the pzeros I had with 2mm left.

Exactly that, part worms arnt even that cheap, when you consider they are half done at best.

I will get some brand new fronts, I know you can't mess about with rubber, those cracks have quickly worsened and those grooves were in the tread block not the carcass. The rears... might have to wait, 2 front tyres are cheaper than, 6 points.

Certainly is mate and when your stamping on the brakes or trying to rescue things when sideways it's the fronts that are king.

People, learn from an attitude like that. If you know / suspect you may need to *ahem* discuss anything with our fine, upstanding members of the constabulary, making sure as best you can that everything else is buttoned up, legal etc will stand you in good stead. If pulled for one thing, there is the risk that (for whatever reason) the plod in question might have/get the hump so make sure if they want to throw the book, there is nothing else for them to throw the book at.

Point the 2nd - what everyone said about skimping on tyres being false economy / bad idea + lots.

C: those who can't afford £75 a corner for ordinary everyday rubber should probably look at their overall budget to see if running a zed is wise (or, come to that, any car which needs £75 tyres)

Rule 6: if I had to spend my working life in one of those terrifying yellow whirry things, I would hope the bloke what looked after it and I had the same attitude to my chosen form of transport!

As above - never skimp on tyres; they are all that is between you and the road.... And always bear in mind the speeds at, and conditions in, which you might be driving.....!!

Conti Sports all round for me at the moment; not cheap, but they have never given me any brown trouser moments either!!

Richard:cool:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Is it just me as I think 75 a corner is really cheap in fact I think 100 a corner is cheap especially when your in to 18+ tyre size not skirt :) anyway I would be happy paying up to £200 a corner if needed but I think you can get really top notch tyres for around the 130-150 mark.

My favourite everyday tyre is Avon ZV5 http://www.avon-tyres.co.uk/car/zv5 used them on current Z and previous one and better than Falken 452s - quieter, last longer and (on one particular sweeping left-hander) grippier. Having used Eagle F1s, Bridgestone S02 and S03 and Falkens, I really like the Avons. Don't ask me about drag or track or high perf but for daily driver, they're top notch. Cheapest I found today £63.50 each inc VAT delivered UK mainland (just quick google search, nothing fancy).

225/50 R16 all round because that's what a JDM is.

Thank you guys, I don't consider myself a chancer, or someone who takes risks with safety equipment (including tyres) those cracks have worsened, the slash I have just noticed. I often feel tread depth after a drive, checking the temperature across the face and always drive with enough tread. I can afford to run a zed, but the price of tyres totally to one side, after a respray, remap and unexpected O2 sensor replaced plus a 1000 mile round trip to pick it up, mars bars feel expensive this week!

With my is it legal, is it not plate...

Stuck on plates are illegal, but all the miles I did with the other one, I had no issues, partly because I am mr 30mph mr 50mph and mr 60mph 90% of the time, I treat every car as a cop, plus many other rules I use to keep myself out of bother. My job is doing dangerous things carefully, I apply a similar mindset to driving passionately, when the time is right, I DRIVE the car. So the plate was the only small misdominor, this one is also clear, reflective, on a legal car. I expect I will be ok, or get told to sort it out.

But yeah, highlights the need to be squeaky clean.
