No spark , not coil pack or plug , any ideas ???

Hi all,

Having swapped an engine in my uk tt manual,

It is missing on the passenger side middle cylinder,

There's no hint of a spark at all,

I've swapped the coil pack & plug for one that's known to be working but still no joy!

So I am assuming that it is down to the wiring etc on the car as appose to the replacement engine.

Any ideas please as I'm definitely more mechanically minded that electrically.

Thanks guys

How have you tested for a spark, just against an earth? I would get out a multimeter anf check for voltage along the wiring then and also check your PTU

Hi,

Yes I took the coil pack off and the plug out, put the plug back in to the pack and put it to an earth and turned it over, got sparks (only weak) on the drivers side bank,

got a really good spark on the front passenger side front cylinder , but nothing on middle cylinder.

Guess Id need a decent multi metre with continuity testing function???

Do you have the later model PTU or not ? The early ones do tend to fail when warm, but a total failure on one, or all outputs is possible.

ive upgraded to the new style ptu incase of this failure,

have you also changed anything on your ecu as when you tighten the plug back in you can overtighten and bent the plug, faling these it could well be a broken wire somewhere

Hi

its a series one but is running a series 2 ptu cos the first one went wrong , has anyone ever heard of a series 2 ptu failing,

seems strange that everything worked fine before the engine swap and now nothing???

I would say that noting is impossible... just unlikely.

I guess I'd be doing a full check of everything section by section...

checking connectors for corrosion or pins pushed out.. and cables for damage.

PTU, CAS, TPS, ECU.. etc..

good luck.

Do a quick search for a recent thread I put up similar problem to yours. There's some links I put up there for some tests, multimeter required through.

Sounds like you need to borrow a good PTU to eliminate that. Its unlikely to be that I though, but its not unheard of for a later gen PTU to fail.

Otherwise as already said, check the main ECU connector, failing that swap for another to eliminate, but TBH sounds more like a loom issue if this wasn't replaced along with the engine swap.

Good luck...

Well Medallion Man 10 points several beers and a big thumbs up from me :thumbup1:

Double checked all the wiring connectors and low and behold the ptu wiring loom connectors metal retaining clip had come apart and the connector separated

Hence the weak sparks and lack of spark on the pass side bank ,

Now it sparks stronger than ever before.

And runs like a dream

Thanks again
