Well I'm rejecting my ds3, its been back to the garage 7 times since january so they are taking it back.

Im going to get another car (NOT CITROEN)

I am unbelievably fussy when it comes to picking a car.

So any suggestions as to what car to go for? Preferably a turbo diesel of some kind but I'm open to all engines. Ive been looking into getting an Audi A6 3.0tdi quattro.

Suggestions below please

I'd never buy french thier crap. I'd never have another vauxhall either they are even worse...I quite like the new fiestas for a small hatch or the BMW 1/3 series for something bigger.

Wouldnt go near a 1 series beemer too boring. Looking around the £6000 mark

If you do go for an audi, stay away from the dsg gearbox I have recovered a fair few of them with gearbox issues. Non of them cheap fixes

For £6000 that is used car money so I would buy something Japanese and avoid everything else

How many miles per year will this car be covering?

  • Author

Id be doing well to buy a new car for £6000  so yes clearly im after a used car, age doesnt really matter. It will be my daily driver but I only do around 5-6k per year. As for the audi it wasnt a dsg, i know how bad they are. This was a 6 speed manual

I was thinking Japanese. Any suggestions. I was hoping to get a zed in the winter for my fun crazy mad car  and most Japanese cars I like are mental. My mind is a blank to be honest

My main suggestion is the fact that you do not need a diesel if you are doing 5-6k per year. Go for a petrol.

What problems was the DS3 giving you?

I like turbo diesel engines.

mood lighting broke

lights were playing up

brakes binding

wheels needed drilling off because they lost the lock nut

brakes binding again

brakes binding again

exhaust rattle

now I've got a dodgy exhaust again and a knock which sounds like a ball joint. Possibly track rod end.

Oh and a what sounds to be a rattly cat!

I've only had it since January and done 4000 miles in it. And 1000 of this miles was when we went to Scotland the other week.

Ide Get a Hilux But thats just because of where I live though the engines are pretty bulletproof I have a m8 with a bmw 530d its pretty old but he loves it to bits had a 320d before loved that too just needed bigger car if its just a daily drive I personally wouldn't be spending 6k on one I don't think you need to, to be honest best car's I have had with least problems have been old ones Last new car I had was a Vauxhall antara 4x4 top spec everything broke lol had a Citroen too that was pants went back 3yrs old bits falling off interior had huge pobs with traction control currently driving a very old very boring toyota corolla 1.6 but its an a to b car 97plate 40'000miles only 2 owners from new it dosn't thrill but its comfy reliable and leaves me with extra money to spend on zed :)

I have been toying with the 530D. But imho bmw just dont know how to do interior design

Ide Have a look at a beemer there nice I am sure you could get a really good one for half your budget I would have bought something more exciting only the fact the corolla has been so good to me plus Having the boring car means im only likely to get caught speeding in one lol.

My main suggestion is the fact that you do not need a diesel if you are doing 5-6k per year. Go for a petrol........................

I agree - no point paying more for the car and more per litre for fuel if you don't have to; and with only 6k miles per year, you'd certainly not feel the benefit of the better fuel economy of a diesel.....

And for £6k, unless you're buying something mental like another Zed, or the like, most other Japanese cars are dull dull dull. The Japanese are only interested in making Micras and Priuses nowadays - stick with German I say....

Richard:cool:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Just depends what you need size wise but a nice golf gti be quite fun to drive quick and decent of fuel too That scuppers me for looking as I just found out today I need to get a truck 4x4 of some description and got very excited as Hilux :) but if this whole diesel thing go's through not to many 4x4 petrols :(

Cheers fellas! Perhaps you are right. A cheapish run around and then I can get a zed too

It's the way forward, eligibility for classic insurance cheap daily cost and gives you freedom to take the zed apart for maintaince without the stress of getting parts and rushing things.

I recommend a Seat Leon FR170tdi.

I absolutely love mine! They look funky, the build quality is good, they're based on the Golf GT TDi with slightly firmer springs, so handling is just fantastic. Mine has the optional 18s, so it really feels sorted out on the road. It's a good cruiser (has 6 speed & cruise control etc), it's really pokey with the 170hp engine, but it's the torque that is just awesome on it, it has nearly 270lbs ft of torque, which isn't far off of a standard Z32 TT! So mid-range, it pulls like a steam train and to be honest, off the mark, it doesn't hang around either. With TC switched off, it'll wheel spin in 3rd!

This is my one, it's the mildly facelifted version of the MK2 which I doubt your budget would stretch to. They fitted quieter engines, revised trim, bumpers and rear end to these, but you'd likely get an earlier one for your budget. With a re-map, you'd get over 200hp and nearly 300lbs ft of torque whilst returning 40mpg. The engines are bullet proof, so don't be afraid of higher mileage examples. If you can stretch your budget a little more, try and get a later model like mine as they look a little better.

I do like the look Si. I will look into it. I won't be rushing into it because I tend t make shite desicions when I do. I'm almost tempted to get a cheap daily. 2-3 grand and then get a decent zed in the winter months. So many choices. Even saw a 1998 mercedes S Class for sale for £3500.

lol Sounds like me last time I rushed in to buying a car It was a vauxhall head gaskets went very soon after purchase loads other stuff went wrong too The seat does look nice and you have a wide budget for a daily my top end is usually around a grand or less I have a mechanic m8 with an old s class he only paid I think it was 1200 for it had a few dings and marks but engine etc sweet I never seem to get a bargain when I buy by myself always get shafted lol, only decent cars i have ever bought have been zeds touch wood each one been reliable Think thats why I been lucking at Nissan Xtrails as my 4x4 option sorry to hi jack thread but as were on dailys subject anyone know if they any good or what probs they have etc.

Hilux is the one but its finding a decent one what about an Izuzu trooper or mitsubishi pajero I'm not fussed about dings etc as it will be getting used offroad quite a bit

3.0 troopers are good 3.2 are ok if the injectors have been changed as they leak diesel into the head. Pajeros are better the 2.8 only has a problem with the injector pump which needs new seals they only cost about £10 if you can do it yourself. But you should be able to get a reasonable 3.2 for your budget which if you delete the egr valve they are great not to bad on fuel either.

cheers mate I am not going to rush in to it but keep my eyes open can last till jan ish at latest without something but i will be super fit ma mate just moved and its a 2mile track to his on the hill house which no car can get up lol and yeh should be able to do the pump seals might take me twice as long as anyone else but i'l have a go at most things
