I spotted today at the petrol station.......

A woman driving a 14 plate car putting £5 of fuel in before going to pay at the kiosk.

Which to me begs the question - why oh why oh why, if you can only afford to put a fiver in, would you be driving a new car in the first place?

No doubt the car is on finance as well - one wonders if that is a struggle too?

Doesn't it make far more sense to run an older car and be able to afford to fill it up????

Or is it just my strange mind that works that way?

Probably spent 8 quid on fags and a fiver on scratch cards whilst she was at it :sneaky2:

Actually after posting I did come to think about it - with some of these modern cars she quite possibly gets as far on a fiver as I do on a tank lol

Could be a hire car with a return fuel policy, they charge rediculous rates for fuel!

Exactly what I was thinking!

Bit of a general swipe at someone's lifestyle!

Could be she forgot her purse, and only had a fiver on her... who knows? As for finance, the majority of new car sales since 2009 have been on tick or lease...and with credit tighter than pre 2008 I would assume if it is on tick then she or the owner has passed with a good credit rating to get finance.

I've been to a garage before, realising at the last moment I don't have my wallet on me, and so scuffed around for a few quid to cover what I've started putting in, a daft mistake but not uncommon...

More over a new car cold get you 60 miles on a fiver and your old car (model?) might only get you 20-30?

Plenty of other reasons as posted but others, but who's to know? Although a Hire or borrowed car sounds more likely.

What Gary said. That or a garage courtesy car.....

I was given a brand new Merc CLS350 CDi Shooting Brake last year - and did the same thing before giving it back! But yes, it could have looked really odd putting just £10 worth of diesel into a £50k motor....

That aside, I wonder why some people do still put £20 or £30 in their cars instead of brimming the tank. Hell, even if you just drive the car to work and back etc, you are always going to use the same amount of fuel in total; which means you still spend the same amount of money over a fixed period regardless.... So you might as well fill up to the max, if only to reduce the time wasted in petrol stations!!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I always put £30 in mine unless I'm going far then I put in £60, why I hear you ask. Quite simply because if its going to sit there going no were for two weeks at a time what is the point in putting a months or mores worth. on the way home from Coventry I put a few quid in about £15 I think, only because it was getting low and I wasn't far but I didn't want to run it right down, no point filling it up though. Only driven it two or three times since that.

I think gaz's suggestion is the most likely. My hire car the other day I only covered six miles in the thing(thankgod horrible snot box fiat 500L second worst car ive even driven, the first was also a fiat funny enough lol) so I didn't bother probably didn't even use a litre....

Same with me. Fuel goes stale and loses RON. Unless I am doing a long distance run, I just wack in quarter of a tank.

Exactly that. I certainly wouldn't brim it for it to sit there for a month or two lol, could spend that money elsewhere in the meantime.

In your Z, I can understand that as you hardly use it... But in the daily driver - surely not...?

Life is far too short to spend standing next to my car at a filling station - so it's full tank every time; and when the needle drops to the red, I carry on a bit further. When the light comes on, hell I can probably make it another 30 miles. When I have done another 30 miles, panic begins to set in, but I resist until I have achieved a reasonable number of miles since the last fill up.... And only then do I fill up once more - only to find that I still had about 4 litres left, hence I could have managed another 20 miles...

My daily is a derv and that's fine as diesel doesn't really go stale.

I use my Z quite a bit in the summer. Fuel loses RON surprisingly quickly, especially when it's warm. Even a few weeks without use, 99ron can lose a few units.

On the way home from Maidstone on Wed round the M25 I only stuck £10 in at Cobham services because those rapacious b'stards were charging £1.399 a litre - 10p a litre more than it was 10m away off the motorway.

No actually it was meant as a bit of fun to be honest :1eye:

I once had a courtesy car with a fuel light on, I put £2.50 in it and drove it back in second to make sure I used every penny of it! I figured half a gallon is 20 miles on a 40mpg car, drive it in second should be down to 10mpg or so, I had 8 miles to do so its only fair!

I fill my daily up every other day or so mind you the last fill up was 550 miles worth of driving lol.

i do exactly the same 4.4v8 range rover and i put £10 of petrol in every 2 weeks for circa 200 miles a week...............mind you i put a lot more lpg in!

My daily is my Hemi engined Dodge Ram. If I put a fiver in, I could get the windows clear !!!

Alan......

Ive put Less than a fiver in my pick up before today as i had no wallet or money on me at the time and needed to get home on an empty tank.

Here's an interesting question then: I wonder if anyone knows the answer?

Have you ever noticed on the fuel pump it always says 'minimum delivery 2 litres' regardless of where you buy your petrol. If you haven't then you never opened your eyes at the petrol station :1eye:

So then.... why do you think the petrol station don't want to sell you £2 worth of fuel?
