Hi guys, due to circumstances of change my insurance renewal this year won't include the storage of my car in a garage. Footman James who I have been with for the last 3 years as far as I'm aware stipulate that as a condition of the policy. Do any classic car insurance companies offer a policy without a garage being used? Insuring it as a normal car will double the premium to £390!

I have a second car, the zed does an annual mileage of about 1500, just went right through Lancaster which then explained they don't insure imports even though it was declared as a fairlady not a 300zx arghhhhh

I'm insured with Classic Line and they are completely aware that my Zed is stored on the drive, not in a garage. :)

What sort of rate did you get, mine was about £200 for renewal this year, based on it being garaged.

Lancaster do insure imports, I was with them last year. Think they just make the rules up.

Mine was £313, but I think that's more to do with the postcode than anything else... :(

I was with Heritage when I had mine. Car parked on driveway. They were excellent when I unfortunately had to claim. From memory the premium was circa £300 for a 3000mpa policy.

Some insurers will offer a classic policy without you garaging the car; but as Andrew says, the most important thing it to be honest!! DO NOT say your car is garaged if it is not - as you will not be covered if anything happens to it!!

I could have got my Z covered if it was stored on the drive - but as I have a garage (and the Z lives in it), it was slightly cheaper for me having it garaged. However, as I have declared it as being garaged, it is stipulated in my policy, that the car must generally be inside the garage, if left within a specified distance from my home; in order to be covered against theft, vandalism etc.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Yeah some phone calls to make, it will hopefully transpire that the car will have a new 30x10ft home in the next year or so, hopefully. Till then il be stuck paying a few extra quid.

I paid £240 ish for my old TT, all mods declared, with 5000 miles (everyday car) and parked on the drive.

Personally I didn't think that was too bad at all.

All sorted, FJ said they would honour it on the drive because I'm in a zone A whatever that means. So all sorted, tax runs out on the last day of August and then it's time for beddy byes while I tear lots of parts off over winter.

I've never had a garage and always had at least one car on a classic policy with both cars being stored on a private driveway.

I'm with A Plan at the minute and they beat the other quotes I got hands down.

I'm with Lynbrook, i have a garage (far distance from my house now mind you since i moved), couldnt even get the zed in the garage due how wide the zed was, plus id have to leave a targa panel removed, so negated any safety the garage would of offered as they are not the most secured things (having one broken into and my tools stolen back in 08), basically lynbrook expect the car to be garaged over night, there is nothing in documents to state it needs to be in there during the day, just a set of hours over night the car needs to be garaged for it to be covered for theft.

So basically, if the car is on the road over night and gets stolen between 10pm and 8am, its not covered by theft, if its garaged however, then its covered. tis all confusing if you ask me. if someone wants your car, a garage door isnt going to stop them.

I don't think its so much that a garage door offers more safety. It is simply that if they can't see it they don't know its there, so an opportunist wouldn't know it was worth breaking in. Could be empty or filled with a few bags of leaves and some wood.
