Is there any precautions I should take before starting a zed that's been unused for approx 2yrs. Is there any need to crank it without firing to get the oil moving? Or any other suggestions?

Fresh oil & fuel at least. Crank it without starting to build oil pressure and ensure everything is nicely coated.

Yes there are, As you say you need to crank the engine to get oil moving before you start it up. To do this; Take out the fuel pump fuse (drivers side inner wing, back of engine, across from the balance bar), remove the fuel filler cap to release any gasses that have built up, put cap back on. Then crank the engine a few times to get the oil flowing. Once done you can put the fuse back in and start it up.

 

This assumes that all fluids and fuel are good.

Once you've done that though, get in and drive it, DO NOT leave it to idle from cold for 10 minutes like some people do thinking they're doing their engine huge favours!! Just take it steady.

Iff you do take it out to drive then pull over after a few miles once upto temp and lift the bonnet to have a looksie as there is a risk from perished water hoses and belts after a long lay up.

I've done this before but I have taken the green (or maybe bleu?) relay out near the drivers accelerator pedal, thought that was the fuel pump relay?
