Thought I should move this from the 'Journal' forum and update where the project is at. Wish I was at Coventry with everyone, but these things always take longer than anticipated, lol

20/01/2013

Having had the car for a few years now I have finally given in to the urge for more power.

The original engine in the car runs superbly only 66k miles with a proven Dyno run @ 357bhp, with boost jets and a uprated chip & air filter. Not bad at all for a 300ZX, but I was bitten by the bug and was set on going for more bhp and reliability, (I know why fiddle with it if it ain't broke). But having been lucky enough to have many nice high powered cars in recent years I wanted to keep the Zed long term and the engine is the first part of the project so it need's to be a good strong/reliable build.

After looking at various options of buying a part built engine form the US I decide to also keep my eyes peeled for the poteintial of purchasing an uncompleted project rebuild.

Back in March/April 2012 an ebay listing caught my eye regarding a nearly completed forged engine rebuild. The only problem with it was that the rebuild wasn't exactly completed by the most reputable of Zed engine builders known within the Zed world. In fact the seller had been caught up in horrific events where parts when missing, work was never finished and finally the garage was broken into and his engine was stolen. Retrieved from a nearby field 24 hours after going "missing". see here for a bit more http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showth...light=s+mochan

After talking with the seller for sometime we struck a deal and I waited for the day when the pallet with the engine would arrive.

It came with forged internals, Wiseco pistons, Eagle rods, ACL Duralite white metal bearings ARP main con rods and head bolts, Tomie 260 degree camshafts with solid lifters & harder springs, SARD 850cc injectors with a Border fuel rails/ new Turbo's, s/steel manifolds, new oil pump, heads polished, exhausts ports and valves shimed & lapped.

Didn't look all that great mind when it finally arrived to be honest, and I still had my doubts as to whether I had done the right thing in buying this.

After stripping down the engine as far I was prepared to take it anyway,

I wasn't going to attempt to go much further, so I thought it would be best to get this done properly!

So a call was made to Jim @ PowerZed to arrange a date to get everything to him in order for him to work his magic.

Just a little update...... well it seems like that my concerns regarding the standard of build were justified.

Once Jim had removed the pistons and rings etc he found that cyl 6 had a chipped scraper ring installed. But things got far worse once he checked the bores, they were way to big!

The compression ring gap was 17 thou, should be 3 thou and the scraper rings had a whooping 25 thou! Also the crank bearings were smeared with what looked like regular grease no sign of any graphogen, this engine may have fired up if I had left things as they were, but it wouldn't have run for long or sounded pleasant either.

Luckily for me Jim had a used block in good condition that we could get re-bored to the correct size to take my pistons etc. So another delay in the the scheme of things but at least this engine is going to run as sweet as a nut!

20th June 2013, 18:18 Thought it was about time I updated the saga.

Unfortunatley the heads were machined to the same crappy standards of the block, i.e no allowance was made for the shims. So we started again with new heads, with correctly fiiting valves and Jim had the shims machined to match everything. As Jim put it " if we would have started this up as it was, it would have rattled it t*ts off". So everything is now in place for the install.

My new clutch plate etc arrived yesterday :thumbup1:

Unplugged as much of the ancillary items before she goes off to PoweZedCar to met its new power plant

Car loaded, and on its way to PowerZed to met its new power plant.

Being a wide arch even with the spare tyre on it was a very tight fit! By the time we reach Jim, the rear tyre had lost all it's air due to being push so hard against the side of trailer.

I was there when Jim was building your car. The spec you've now gone for with Jimmer's expertise is very impressive! That car will be a monster and a reliable one at that!

Thanks Si, I think it's money well spent although I don't want to think about the ££££ too much, lol.

Just wishing that I was running her in on the way to Coventry and back. Still as soon as she's back I plan on getting her on the road for what's left of the Summer.

Ditto mate! I am soooo gutted to have missed out on Coventry today. :(

Well, maybe you'll have it running for Beaulieu in 3 weeks time!

Yeah I was impressed when I saw the BDE engine mounts! Sure was a nice build, had a good nosy whilst Jim had it! :)

Just last week whilst will Jim has been away, the car was already to have the final part of the works carried out, the last section of the exhaust.

As there is no "off the shelf" solution for a wide arch in either 2.5 or 3" system I thought this was going to be a major problem to sort. But Jim said that a very reputable firm near him could do the work. (Infinity)

Seeing as the car is 250 miles away from from me (round trip) and Jim has no way of getting it to Infinity, I figured on hiring a trailer to move the car.

This is where I would like to say a HUGE thank you to Jaffa :thumbup1::clap: as he trailered my car car to Infinity and back again to Jim's workshop.

That really is appreciated, and just goes to show again how great this forum is helping out fellow Zed nuts. I hope that I can repay the favour sometime Jaffa?

Now with a complete 3" exhaust, 4" tail pipes.

I haven't hear it yet, but according to Jaffa it sounds good... so thats good enough for me.

Hopefully picking up the car soon, once Jim has sorted a few minor bits.

Then it's due to get the front bumper back on, (now with the smooth look, although in primer) MOT'd and off to Noz for some mapping to see what she can do, can't wait!

I bet it did Si, if you heard it with out the rear exhaust?

I will certainly be aiming to make that one Si!

think he meant being nosey rather than it was noisy!

No problem helping you out, won't be long till she's back :)

A few more updates, nothing to exciting yet. Car is back home now,

ZED HOME.jpg

and the first job was to replace the viscous fan as the original was acting up. Bought a 'pattern' from MJP for a fraction of the cost fo the OEM unit.

Viscous.jpg

Drilled out broken studs on wing, and drilled & taped the metal for bolts.

WING STUDS.jpg

After that I test fitted the bumper and found out that I have another problem. Having installed larger IC's the air ducts are pressing up against the face of

IC ducts.jpg

after cutting back both ducts it eventually went on without fouling the IC face, but then I found the inside of the bumper fouls on the outer IC exit couplings so some more fettling on the positioning of the IC mounts :hammer:

Should be some updates soon :whistling:

Howard, what did you do with your old intercoolers? You went from Z1 SMIC to Z1 BA SMIC

I did have some Greddy IC's on the car Si, but sold them a while back.

The ones I have now are from AMS and are the same size as Ashspec Massives

http://www.amsmotorsports.com/shop/ind/rs-performance-2-5-superflowz-sidemount-intercoolers-ash-greddy-z1-hks.html

Dammit, would have bought those if you still have them. Will stick to plan A then and will bring back some Z1 SMICs when I go over in October. Thanks though.

Noel/Jim came to the map the car over the weekend, and good progress was made until he found out that the FPR has a faulty diaphragm.

So the car is drivable, but can't get onto boost, as the engine leans out as the boost climbs. So as soon as I have a new FPR i will be back to get it finished

Everything else is perfect, temps, tickover, etc...

As for the exhaust well I'm glad I didn't go for the "anti-social" option, as this "loud" option, sets off one of my neighbours car alarm just as crawl past his car. I think Jim might be right, I will have to think about moving............ to a very isolated location!

Easy done lol, did you buy your intercoolers from AMS direct or through a dealer?

Direct from AMS Steve, didn't have any issues. They are really well made, even Jim was impressed!
