Ouch! Worst case scenario of this happened in Tenerife when a PANAM 747 and a KLM 747 collided on the runway, late 70's I think.

 

Correct. Destroyed both planes, both full of passengers - that was in fog I think, but similar scenario!

It was 1977. The KLM passenger plain did not have permission for take off but went anyway.

The Panam was just about to exit the runway. 580 odd died.

The KLM aircraft was given clearance by the tower. But the KLM craft took as that as a green light to take off.....then bang!

I agree with you Si, the permission was given with regards to the route (ATC) the plain would take and not permission to take off which was the point I was referring to.
