Hi all,

was just wondering: seeing as they offer pretty similar performance, and a good ZX can be had for a little over £6k, is the Supra worth another £3k on top of that? Anyone driven both and is able to comment on how they compare? Thanks guys

Yep, guys lets keep this on Topic, Seb wants to make decision between a Supra and a 300zx, all I can say is drive them both and

see what they look like in the flesh then decide.

to be honest, i had almost forgotten what my post was about! but hey, if you can't hijack a post or 2, then what is the world coming to? :) Oh, here's something perverse: was looking for quotes for next year when i am 21 and will be near getting either car, and here's what i got from tesco

1) 21 year old male, central london, 3 years no claims, uk 300zx TT manual worth £6k: £2200 fully comp

2) 21 year old male, central london, 3 years no claims, uk supra TT manual worth £9k: £1600 fully comp

que? how weird is that

The UK spec supras are very cheap to insure, the imports get serious premiums though. I have a UK car and I pay £540 fully comp on a modified car, watford post code. I actually pay more on the calibra and vectra which is just crazy, but there you go.

JB

its crazy i tells ya!

and I quote you directly, Tim:

-

'My next car WILL be a Skyline, after owning a 300 I really don't want anything else'

-

'I think I would definately have one [skyline], after owning a Z and all the problems they have'

-

'You can rave all you like about the Z against the Skyline, but at the end of the day it is a world beating machine(Skylark)!'

-

'Trust me, when I say, if I could afford a GT-R I would have one tomorrow like Nick said!'

-

'When I was at Middlehurst to pick my car up(moons ago) they had the most nicest, most bollox(ish) Skylark in there...GTR-V Spec with all the UK spec. How much? Oh lots, about 30K I think and that was 2nd hander...I rest my case!'

-

'I agree with your points mate, but the Skylark is a work of art!'

-

'Clarkey, I respect your opinion mate but aren't you leaving something out here? How many ****ing cars have you driven?

Since when has the ****ing Skyline been based on a family car you muppet?

Yep they do a four door version but the GT-R is about as far from a family car as you can get!!!'

-

'Z and Skyline, class! Best of both worlds'

-

'You said it mate, all you have to do is fill it up with Optimax and install a magic tree air freshner to the rear view mirror and you've got 1000bhp!!! CLASS!!!'

-

'Never raced either a standard or modded Skyline on the strip, but did race them on the track and they do leave a Z for dead'

-

'Fave Car (other than 300ZX):Skyline GT-R'

-

'One thing I will say is this...those rear lights! Yep, copied by Fiat and where did they originate? Skylark!!! God they look good!!! '

-

'Yeah, that Skylark sounds well nice to be honest...maybe if I had a crystal round thing and could see into the future I would have waited, saved and bought! Muppet!!!'

-

'I love all things Skylark, you can do so much to them. They're comparable to a lego or mecano set. Here you go, here's the basic config. now you take it away, fook about with it and the result is...

A ****ING MONSTER!

Skylarks are designed to be stealth, hey...'

-

So it would seem that your piss taking and general dislike of the Skyline is based upon me owning one. Which is both irrational and laughable.

Hahaha how true...the majority of new younger MKIV Supra owners only seem to be interested in fitting neons and flamer kits to their cars, not interested in performance at all...it is a real shame as they are very nice fast cars. If this is what you want to do...buy a Supra you will not be alone in tactless 'show' mods.

Objection! Em, if you ever see me with neons, you have my permission to shoot me :D Much more interested in spending my money under the bonnet :D

Seb, the Supra is the more reliable of the two cars, by quite a margin from what I've read here. However, the Zed is a far better looking car - it looks fast while parked up, from all angles. The headlights and bumper of the Supra have always made me think that someone has shoved a catcus up its arse.

Performance wise, as standard the Supra is the faster car in all respects - but then as its release was delayed specifically because the Zed came out, I should hope so. To be honest though, there won't be much real-world difference.

Mods/work are easier on the Supra - everything seems to be a bastard to get to on the zed. IIRC topping up the washer jets is an engine out job ;)

Supra's aren't cheap though when they do need work - my UK 6sp costs ~£200 for an A (minor) service, and ~£350 for a B (major). Cambelt is a £200 job, engine mounts (prone to leak) is about £400, diff oil cooler (UK only) £150, pair of front (UK) discs is in the hundreds (can't find that invoice), etc etc. A UK needs an oil/filter change every 4500miles/6mths, an A service every 9000miles/12mths, and a B service every 27000 miles/3yrs. Plugs are replaced every 60,000 miles, and cost over £100 for a set of 6. My rear tyres will have lasted about 10,000 miles when they need replacing, but then I've done no track days and I have uprated traction control (more about that later), and cost about £130 each. Fronts last a little longer and are a little cheaper.

Petrol is the worst - however much you think you're going to use - double it. I *very* rarely average more than 20mpg (SUL) from a tankfull, usually get 17mpg or so, have had a worst of 12mpg, and my best ever is 21.5mpg. My mods are only full decat and bleed valve, averaging 1bar boost.

A UK has an 80l tank, but as standard will happily take normal UL, only needing SUL up to about 1.2bar boost. An import demands SUL, and if modded really, really wants an octane boost on top of that.

Other than the trim level, there is no noticable real-world difference between import and UK Supra's. There is also no noticable difference between the manuals and autos.

If you are going to be using the car as a daily commuter, or be sitting in traffic often, I *strongly* recommend an auto. It's an *amazing* box, can be turned into a 4-speed manual on request, extremely strong, very smooth, and certainly worth a test-drive. I say this as auto UK's outnumber manual ones, are cheaper, and come up for sale more often. I didn't like autos until I got my MKIII, and now I'm converted - and the auto in that isn't as good as the MKIV one! Keep an open mind is all I say about that - you could well be suprised.

The traction control system fitted on all MKIV's is, IMO, poor as standard, and if you change the wheels/suspension, dangerous. If you change the wheels/suspension to anything other than Lexus wheels or different Toyota suspension, then budget a further £600 or so to get the Racelogic Traction Control system. It has saved quite a few Supra's in its time, and worth every penny and then some. My first MKIV didn't have it, had a very poor wheel/suspension setup (not my doing), would kick out at *any* opportunity, and eventually contributed to its being written off. The RL system *would* have prevented the accident. The Supra has a *lot* of torque, very low down (mine makes over 170lbft at 1500rpm), and then single-twin transition can often double the torque in less than 1000rpm, which *will* spin the wheels on wet roads, and occasionally dry ones too. When something that weighs 1600 kilos starts sliding, you're a passenger.

My current car has the system, as well as standard wheels, and import suspension (slightly lower and harder than the UK, but still matched perfectly to the car). It takes a lot to unstick it, and even if it does, the RLTC smoothly cuts power to restore grip - it turns a big heavy car into something you can chuck around like an Elise, although it doesn't re-write physics. Due to the way it cuts wheelspin almost before it happens, it also rather increases tyre life, which is good.

TBH, get the RLTC whether you get a Supra or a Zed - it's well worth it.

Boot space: The Supra doesn't have any.

Rear seat space: The Supra doesn't have any.

Hmm, can't think of anything now, and I'm knackered, so I'm going to bed. Ask if you want to know anythign else.

Keith

Seb, Keith is correct to a point about the Supra is the more reliable of the two cars, I belive this is due to the fact that the majority of the Z32's(300ZX) in the UK are 1989 to 1992/3 models, many are cracking on 12 years old or older hence the need for more replacement parts(12 years of 280Bhp+ will take its toll).

I belive one member on here has an imported 1996 model and stated it was/is more reliable than his previous Porsche(a few london owners have spotted a black 1999 300ZX in london).

Many Z32's are Japanese imports with questionable service history(some imports have Japanese history however).

I think approx 1,390 300ZXs were on British roads in 1994(according to September 1994 issue of TopGear: Jeremy Clarkson). UK Twin Turbos 2+2's were sold in the UK up until they were removed from the UK market in 1994/1995(continued sales in US till 1996, in Japan sales continued till 1999/2000).

After a few years many owners were unwilling to pay the large "Porsche price bracket" service costs for what was seen as "just a Japanese car"(the MKIV Supra and RX7 were not released till approx 1993) so services may have been missed or corners cut. Imports can be bought cheaply, but again people are unwilling to spend the money to bring them back to spec - hence the low prices of some imports.

Like many people have said condition and history is the key mate!

Re: Preference.

Like Keith said the looks of the MKIV Supra dont do it for me (catcus up its arse - lol :D ). The Z32 is more subtle in styling not lairy and swoopy just cos it was the fashion.

I found you sit very low in the MKIV Sup' and the interior is very dark(as in no light) - but then I am used to driving my Z32 with the targa top shades off, so the interior is always light and airy(sounds like a Bold freshner advert!).

I like the performance of the Z32, the history(ever heard of the 240Z!) and the community both here and in the US and Japan.

If you chose to get a Zed then the Insurance is approx £400-£500 for a 26yr old in a medium risk area on a UK Zed(as its classed as a Classic car now). I pay £760 for an Import Twin Turbo in SE London(High Risk-you bet!) which isnt bad for a 26yr old on a group 20 car in SE London(No garage/no tracker) .

Insurance Co's that have been kind to me in London were: Admiral, Bell Direct(part of Admiral), Elephant(part of Admiral), Firebond(UK cars only - classic policy), Adrian Flux(currently insured with them). Not so kind(shite service but cheap) was Insurance Factory.

If you have the cash for a MKIV Sup' then you have the cash for a late model import Z32, i.e 1996 onwards.

Or a late 1994/1995 UK spec 300zx with full history etc.

Or an early model 300ZX and shit loads of mods!! :D :D (but expect to replace worn or old items)

They are both rated very highly as drivers cars by the worlds Motoring press, Evo rate the Z32 300ZX as Nissans second best drivers car, the first being the Skyline GTR. Evo rate the MKIV Sup' as the "japanese 928".

The 300ZX still ranks 5th in the Car and Driver Top 10 Model Scoreboard for 2002 6 years after leaving the US market! The next japanese 'supercar' is the RX-7 which is 10th!

Both cars have there place in Japanese sports car history.

The 300ZX was hailed as "Japans first Supercar" when it was tested in 1989 by Autocar, so many see it as the foundation on which the other manufactures built upon(as Keith mentioned the MKIV Supra was delayed 3 years due to the abilities of the Z32 300ZX taking Toyota by suprise).

I look upon my Z knowing that it was/still is "the daddy" of Japanese Twin Turbo supercars(R32 GTR was Japan only remember). She maybe old and other cars are more advanced, but when she's parked up, cooling down after another Twin Turbo enhanced blast I always look back at least 3 or 4 times, smile, and think... "damm that looks good".

hahahahaha top sense of humour, supra bloke :)

Also what a pleasure to read balanced opinion froman owner of a car not a ZX. Sometime this place descends into yar boo sucks my car's better than your car chiz chiz which is uterly boring and wet and weedy.

Trey's piece also nice one.

Just to add my 2p it always seemed to me that Supras were "US muscle car flavor" and 300ZXs were "Euro supercar flavour". This doesn't make either inherently better than the other - just a choice of approaches. Whatever floats your boat.

Even though I'm as pleased as a thing which is very pleased indeed with my Z (over 3 years now), if I had to choose between a doggy or unknown SH Z and a good Supra, I'd take the Soup.

Hope you find a good car whatever the make.

(Just one last thought - have you thought about an earlier Z - say a 260Z or 240Z? Mucho cheaper, great street cred and top performance and a nice club to help. Then later on when you've got more wonga, get a 300 / Soup?)

I missed the fight, still the highlights were nice!

Both the 300ZX and the Supra are 'Hatchbacks with attitude' so the choice really is one of looks.

You could of course get a proper car with good vision, a boot, class, comfort and reliability 1 or more of which is missing from both cars mentioned.

But hey.

What do I know.

Sorry Keith, I wasn't really referring to the supra owners who have had their cars for a long time, it seems that most of the new ones just want to spend their money on neons etc etc, That bloody F&F film has a LOT to answer for . :D but each to their own I guess

I couldn't believe that you would be so stupid as to put neons on such a lovely example of a Supra
