Hi all,

was just wondering: seeing as they offer pretty similar performance, and a good ZX can be had for a little over £6k, is the Supra worth another £3k on top of that? Anyone driven both and is able to comment on how they compare? Thanks guys

Depends on who you ask. :D

Supra guys will say supra we will say 300ZX.

£6000 for a Z plus £3000 on the mod and it will easly out perform a Supra.

As you said they are very simalar. I think the Supra has the slight edge on the ZX but the engine is more tuned. 500cc injectors I think over the Z 360cc. The turbos produce 12psi and the Z 9psi. Make the specs the same and I think the Z will out perform.

One good thing about the Z now is if you get a good one 10 years old you can insure it on classic insurance.

Also you have to go on what you think looks better. I personally dont like the Supra look, but some say the ZX look is dated and OTT. I dont think it is.

Stuart

Just seen your age. You sure you can afford the insurance?

Or are you loaded? Cos you need to be to keep these cars on the road. ;)

The cash from the sale of my saxo will cover insurance, and leave me a bit left over. The ZX (or Supra) is being funded by a combination of me, my mum, some of her shares, and (if it comes to it) some of my savings that my mum has been putting aside to give me a head start in life... or over other road users :D Also, by the time I will be getting the new car next year, i will have finished uni, and be working, albeit still part time, but enough to keep the thing on the road (i hope)

Well take it from me

I am at Uni too, and get used to having no money at all. :(

Where you from?

Not being funny, but what happens when something goes wrong?

anything you do on these cars cost 500 pounds lol.

Supra's are dog ugly (my opinion) but far easier to work on and they come with alot of decent things in thw way of mods.. larger injectors, dead easy to change turbos (not an engine out job)

ect ect

but dont kid yourself regarding costs on them, as they are very expensive to run.

Finances aside - as that's your concern, but I do feel that a Warranty or something may be in order...but what spec ZX are you looking at?

NAs will be cheaper to insure, but TTs are more fun, IMHO. ;)

i was in exactly the same situation a month ago, had a mk3 supe and really wanted a mk4, as u say your looking around 8k-12k for a supe of reasonable condition, after much consideration i decided i couldnt justify the cost, and then a zed came on the scene and like u say offers similar performance, i snapped it up and love it to bits, its definately fun to drive, and from what ive seen reasonable to maintain unless something major goes wrong.

looks wise i think the zed has more of a unique look, the supra just looks like a bog standard coupe and if it wasnt for the huge shopping trolley spoiler wouldnt stand out that much, first time u drive down a town centre street u will feel very odd with everyone looking at you, i certainly did.

Stuart, I'm from London, studying in London, and living at home.

Ajay, ZX wise, a 92 series 2 uk manual TT in red, and Supra wise a 95 uk car in blue.

300z, I know what you mean about things going wrong, but I should be able to handle repairs of around the £500 without too much hassle, and if anything far more expensive comes up, I can get some help from my mum and then pay her back. She is convinced I will end up killing myself in a fast car, but is also convinced that I will sell the thing (ZX or Supra) within 6 months as running cots will overwhelm me, so I do want to prove her wrong by staying alive once I get the car, and also keeping it on the road for a good 5 years or so.

I was all decided on the ZX, when I mentioned to my mum that Supras are also very good as we drove past one, and she said that perhaps we should get one instead. I dunno, stupid choices.

Is a Supra going to be more expensive to run than a ZX? Or should it be more reliable as it will be a later year?

Seb

By your own requirements, the Zed will already by 3 years older than any Supra that you get.

IMHO, there is nothing on the road that equals the Zed - not only in terms of speed or whatever, but in looks.

Supras are ok...nothing wrong with them, if that floats your boat. Id obviously doesn't mine, or the vast majority of people on here - hence their choice of car.

If you're going to go for it, get a Zed! MUCH more fun and looks so much better! :D ;)

Repair-wise, if anything on the Zed costs ONLY £500, you're doing well.... ;) Not sure about the Supra.

What's your insurance going to be like? The Zed is a grp 20 car...anyone know what the Supra is?

That'll be expensive insurance then :) When I got mine I was paying £1750 TPF&T (23, garaged, Slough) - but that was on an Import, knock off at least a third off that to get a UK price, sometimes you can even half it..

Repair costs - not sure there is anything you can fix for £500 on these cars :)..

I paid £4k for mine in August last year.. Over the next 8 months I spent at least another £5k in repairs and probably £2k in upgrades..

I get the feeling your mother is going to be very poor soon ;)

I struggle to run mine sometimes - but then I do have the disadvantage of a mortgage (but the advantage of a well paid job). Still, what would life be without it's little challenges?

This is what I have spend in the last 2 months on my Z.

Radiator recon £110

2 Front tyres £148

Track rod end £61

Fitting Track Rod End and 4 wheel tracking £36

New clutch £377

Clutch Fitting £150

Flywheel Skim £80

Rear Crank Seal £20

Petrol tank neck and drivers door handle £30 (Thanks Andy)

Grand total of £1012.

 Jesus. I just gone into a state of shock.

And I can tell you Seb, I have had it lightly too. This is the worse my Z has been in.

GET A ZED THEN :D

Also to consider if you are at Uni,is the luggage space!

Cant get golf clubs in a Supra, you can with a Nissan(like it?)

Did you know that was on of the requirments of the Z when it was being built. It had to be able to fit a set of golf clubs in the boot. :D

Also while you are at Uni consider the jealous factor. I drive mine to Uni every now and then and costs me £2 a day to park.

But you still get people doing this

I have had 3 attempts at my car at Uni. The one pictured, one time they tried to get through my boot and I had to get a new spoiler, and one time they tried to steal my alloys. I was driving home wondering what was making the knocking noise. When I get him I looked and found that one of my alloys was only held on by 3 studs.

Stuart

its true, the Supra has bugger all boot space, my Catapillar work boots have to be laid down if they are at the very front of the boot otherwise it wont close...but then I have a family wagon for shifting things round in.

The mkiv supra doesnt have any design faults, where I believe the 300zx can be a little prone to a blown head gasket (lightly roast me if Im wrong). UK spec supras have bigger injectors and steel turbo internals, but the imports are still just as quick.

Performance is going to be tricky to compare. My supra with about £2k of mods ran a 12.9 at Santa Pod and ran in that trim for about a year before the next owner blew the turbos apart. Im not sure there are many 300s that have run those times at pod with those levels of mods.

Might be an idea to come down to the Bracknell meet on the 17th Nov and take a look at the cars. Its each to their own really, I find the 300 is looking a little 80s now, the Supra looks 90s and the only car that keeps looking good is the RX7.

The problem with any sports car is when the price falls below about 10K people with shell suits and baseball caps start buying them and keep coming and asking you how much 'brake' yours has then move on to tell you about their mates cossy thats got 700 horse.

You may have met some of these already Branners :D:D

Anita, insurance in London is pretty bad anyway. At 18, on my 1 litre Saxo, my first year of insurance fully comp was £1700. The next year was £1400, and this year was a mere £1029. At age 21, the projected insurance on a £6k 92 ZX was £2200, as I recall, which is far less than what I expected, so I am happy about that.

I owned a Mk III Soup and to be perfectly honest it was the best car I ever owned!

Mk IV Soup comes straight out the box with 320 horses and does not look as good as a Z IMHO!

I wanted one but couldn't afford one...simple!

I do love me Z but it has been nowt but trouble but the Soup costs alot more to buy second hand.

Nice motor though, I still think, like the Z, they are not looking 10 years old or whatever. Still rather have a Soup or an RX-Heaven over a Skylark. Just my personal opinion.

P.S. infact and it is FACT most motoring journalists rate the Mk IV Soup as and I quote "a Skyline beater!" CLASS!!! ROFL :D

Well, using Gran Turismo 3 i did some performance testing, and while the Supra beat the ZX, and 2 other £9k-£11K cars, the Impreza and R32, around the autumn ring track (6 secs faster than the ZX and 16km/h higher speed on the main straight), there was a mere 0.6secs seperating the ZX and Supra over the quarter mile. And yes, I am that sad. :)

Seb

But a computer game cant prepair you for what it feels like to go 0-60 in 5 seconds. 5 seconds may seem long when you are looking at your watch, but it seems a hell of a lot shorter behind the wheel.

And yes you must be sad to do test like that ;)

I know what you mean (not about being sad, but that too). I did a little work experience for evo, and 2 summers ago, I joined them on a 2 day tack car test at croft in Darlington. Got some great passenger rides, of which the 650bhp R32, the Evo VI and the Stealth B6 stand out. Coming back to the real world and playing about with an Evo VI in GT3 felt like wading through treacle.

On the way back from Darlington to London, we hit 160mph in the R32, and I had a headache for 3 hours after i got home from the exhaust and total lack of soundproofing. Fond memories.
