In the past I’ve had a nightmare trying to fill the gearbox and diff with new oil. This time round I purchased one of these form Opie Oils along with my fluids.

Now the image above states that it’s for extracting fluids. For this it’s fantastic and really sucks!

However Opie Oils description is as follows:

“This great product from laser is designed to make that annoying and frustrating task of filling (or removing) oil / fluids from hard to reach areas in engine bays, motorcycles and machinery a breeze. Cut down on mess and time by simply sucking oil from a container into the pump then using it to precisely fill things like gearboxes and diffs.”

So once I’d successfully filled it with my nice new fluid I proceeded to fill the gearboxes. Oil pissed out of the plunger end, all over the floor and me. Tried it again and the same happened. After taking it apart, the piston is sprung loaded and not particular well sealed. As soon as you start to push the fluid out, the increased pressure pushes the oil past the seal and into the void behind the piston. This fills up until you tilt the pump upright and then it all flows through the plunger hole!!! I just about managed to fill both gearbox and diff with the 5L of fluid I had. There was a lot of waist oil and lots of cleaning up needed.

It’s not particularly expensive, but certainly does not do as Opie says it does and just wanted to let you all know so you don’t waste your money on it. I think it cost me more in wasted race synthetic fluid than to buy. Avoid unless you just want to suck – for which it’s fine (as Laser Tools state).

I got a clark one of those years ago and found it o.k. the diff oil is a lot thicker (stiffer) than gearbox oil though and needs more pressure like you say, it never leaked. Can't have paid more than £12 for mine from machine mart.

I would get in touch with Guy at Opie Oils and inform him what happens when you used it.They have a good reputation for customer service.
