Hi All,

I'm in a bit of a situation in work. Basically my so-called workmate who is 13 years my junior and hasn't done a decent days' work in his life has just been regraded to the same grade as myself.

The reason he got the promotion was through claiming to do half of my job on his regrade form. My managers didn't read the form properly before it went to HR and even they looked shocked when I told them he'd got it.

He's claimed to be managing 9 people when he manages no one.

He also stated that he uses the workshops and wears PPE - he doesn't do either - not ever.

He stated that he sets up eye-trackers - he wouldn't know how to switch one on!

As if that wasn't bad enough, the sneeky sh*t applied for a grade above me and HR have been saying that he's close in points to getting it in his appeal - yes he even appealed the fact that he didn't get a double-promotion.

The reason I'm so pissed is that he's incompetent (I've carried him for 10 years), he's lazy and he's a major (verging on a bully) distraction to everyone because he runs his big gob constantly. I previously worked with his dad in the local hospital and he was just the same (lucky me eh?)

I have to look after all the electronics and design complex stuff for research each day and look after all the IT stuff in our building. This guy can only install Windows and order machines - that's it.

The whole set up sucks and it's a University FFS. This guy has virtually no qualifications and I'm doing an Open University degree part time and have already got an HND back in 1993.

The way I see it I've got three options:-

1. Report it to my union or HR themselves, but that might fall of deaf ears because my dumb-assed managers signed it off as being truthful beforehand.

2. Try to resolve it with my managers (otherwise they might get into trouble too and shaft me over!)

3. Walk out and tell them to stick their job on principle and let their whole research programme go to sh*t!

I hope someone can give me a bit of advice because I'm struggling to face up to this crap to be honest.

Cheers,

Dave

I wouldn't leave Dave first thing to do is speake to the union let them know your concerns then put it in writing and give it to your hr manager then thay have 7 days to act on it,do you have training cards where you work if so thay will be pulled and then looked at and see who and when he was signed off to use certain tools and if the hr are any good he be called in and asked to talk his way through the job if thay still think he good for the job fine let him fall on his ass do not carry him and be upfront and tell him your not doing it when it's hits the fan you got clean hands as your letter is on record you think he can't do the job and you told him just do your job mate

look after number one ,normaly if you make waves its you whos out on your ear but just do your job from now on not his

Rate concerns with your manager, and ask about increasing your pay grade. Don't worry about the other person too much, he will come unstuck when he is asked to do things he is saying he's capable of doing

It's an unfortunate reality that bell ends like that often become 'managers'! As said, don't cut your nose off to spite your face by leaving. By all means get the feelers out for another job and definitely don't do the guy any favours, leave him to sink or swim in the deep end. I feel an appeal would possibly not get you anywhere as the people that signed him off as competent for the job would probably not want to lose face.

This sort of advice is easy to give from the outside, but I feel for you buddy, friction in the workplace is something that I would dread to have to deal with considering we spend a good portion of our lives there.

Sometimes bringing things to the right peoples attention doesn't get you anywhere! I've recently been having a crap time at work due to the fact my supervisor took a dislike to me and my friend and was doing everything she could to make life difficult for us including getting the security manager to watch us we informed management and took out a grievance against her only to be told that it could or more likely would be turned around and go against us as she would claim we were bullying her lol

We dropped the grievance and just got on with our work trying to stay out of her way as she has since been demoted but still try's it on now and then it get us into trouble her words were "I will do everything in my power to get rid of them before I leave for Australia "

My words are I will knock the bitch out before she leaves for Australia lol

Let the fooker sink Dave, don't help him at all and they will soon see he isn't up to the job, good luck in whatever you do and most of all keep your chin up :)

Thank you all for your good advice. It sounds like we all go through this sh*t at some time or other. I've had it in most jobs to be honest.

I would have been in a perfect position to let him sink this week, but unfortunately the ever-lucky fooker booked 2 weeks off and will conveniently avoid the difficult job which he is incapable of doing - grrr.

Interestingly the job he claimed to do (managing 9 people) is being done by a union representative, so I'm sure he wouldn't be too impressed if the cat were to be let out of the bag by someone else for example!

Look after yourself and don't worry about him. Use his "re-grading" to justify your own, above him obviously. You don't need it to look like sour grapes, just equality and fairness.

Basically what Andy said....

You need to look at your own situation and ask yourself "Am I [otherwise] happy with my own job/position/remuneration etc?" This is the main reason that all companies keep salary details confidential - and for me, running the company's finance department, I know everyone's pay. Luckily I have always been the objective type and, as long as I am happy with my own "lot," I have never looked at anyone else's wages with envy:wink:

And if you do decide on a course of action, your "option 2" is the best staring point. Raise the issue verbally with your own managers - perhaps one with whom you have a good relationship - and then follow it up with an e-mail or letter; highlighting what you discussed, so as to cover your own arse!

Good luck mate - I hope you get it sorted. We are all at work for a significant proportion of our lives, so we have to make sure we are happy there!

Thanks guys.

I've taken your advice and today I happened to meet up with a senior member of staff. I told him about the fact that I wasn't happy with my current grade and that I was applying internally for a higher-graded post in another department, which is true. Within an hour the same guy leaked some emails to me that had been exchanged between all senior academics within 58 minutes! They were stating that their research programmes wouldn't be able to continue if I left. The good news is that they're now looking at fast-tracking my promotion! I'm made up with this to say the least.

I really appreciate all your comments - I almost lost it in work, but you guys saved me and the outcome looks so much better now. If I ever meet you all in person I will be buying!

Cheers,

Dave

I was going to make a sarcastic comment when i first read the title as i didnt think of the serious nature of the post but all im going to say now is well done and good luck in the future

Thanks guys.

Thanks guys for all your positive comments.

I finally got the re-grade, but unfortunately they gave Captain Bullshit a double promotion after he appealed! I've never seen anything like this in my life to be honest.

Cheers,

Dave

Well done Dave. Just ignore this other bloke mate, he's not worth worrying about. People like that tend to bury themselves eventually..

Well done Dave and dont worry about the other guy as he will find it difficult to live up to his grade.
