Looking at buying a 300zx - What about this one...

Hey guys,

Thought I would post this 300zx - Wondering if these are simple fixes in the terms of a ZX?

Found the add on Pistonheads http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/nissan/300zx/nissan-300zx-twin-turbo/2059700?isexperiment=true - Think its rather cheap but what do you guys think? Will it need much money spent on it to get it straight?

Was thinking I could get some black leather seats or bucket seats... to deal with that issue but dont know what fits atm.

In general please offer your advice...

But don't put a bodykit on it!!! :(

Yes and yes!

Actually there are sometimes a few hidden bargains to be had - people chuck in the towel and sell up on a whim, at a low price just for a quick sale. It's not that there's anything major wrong with the car, more like they are tired of the general running costs applicable to a 25 year old junior supercar!

Don't forget, when new the 300zx was £34k - scale that up for today and you're looking at Jag XK8 money! And despite some members achieving a heady 26mpg+ do not realistically expect more than 19 average - you will use the power:wink:

And as said above, do not rule out a car with high miles - a well cared for example will not show signs of excess miles and will most likely have had the old, worn out parts replaced. Ditto for a car where the owner has "had enough" by the time he sells, he might have already lavished £000s on improving and upgrading bits only to run out of money or enthusiasm. Or both!

As said above, the costly things to check for are rust - sills, rear arches, floorpan and the lower portion of the front wings where they bolt to the frame. And turbos - like Groover said, check for smoke when booting it - but also let the car idle for 10 minutes after a hard drive to see if any blue smoke appears during that time. Turbos should spool up relatively quickly and quietly - you may hear a faint whistle with the windows open, but generally stock turbos are not noisy!

Look at the colour of the oil too - engine oil should be a nice golden brown and auto trans oil should be pink, with no traces of a burnt smell. The operation of the cooling system should be bang on too - the car should not overheat. It gets very hot under the bonnet of a 300zx - especially the TT model!

And make sure there has been a recent cam belt change as well - if not budget for having it done right away; along with the water-pump, thermostat and (sometimes) the pulleys.

Hope that helps a bit too! And always ask us if you see a car you like; we may know a bit of its history and ownership - and often a member local to where the car is being sold might be kind enough to meet you there and take a look with you!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Thanks for that! Makes a lot of sense!

It's clear body kits are not liked around here much...
