if your targas are leaking can the water find its way into the boot? i opened the boot and found an inch of water in one of the corners. :censored: doesnt help when u live in northern ireland and it does nothin but feckin rain.

My targas leak like a sieve too, but I just leave a seat cover over them to catch the drips and then tip the water out while I'm waiting for the engine to warm up.

I have tried to figure out where its coming from but the cause still remains a mystery for now!

Water in the boot shouldn't be coming from the targa.

I'd say it could be coming from the resar screen rubber, the rear lights seals or the washer jet(leaking hose).

Mine sploshes down my arm and neck when I hit the brakes. Wondering if it can get under the strip because I literally have to pour it out of the roof..might take it off and silicone that too next.

If your trying to trace leaks, fill a large bucket with water and add food colouring until its nice and bright then pour over the car.

It allows you to trace the water back to the leak a lot easier.

I use my smoke machine, saw the idea on wheeler dealers, works a treat you can see exactly where water goes in by the smoke coming out.

o yeah forgot about that one. yeah they used it on an aston?

....Or the wiper-arm grommet; that sometimes gets unseated and allows water to pass into the tailgate - which in turn runs into the boot when it gets full; or when you open the tailgate!!

In theory the targas should only leak if the rubber has shrunk with age - or if the drain holes are blocked allowing water to build up in the internal gutters! You can buy a silicone rubber "rejuvenator" lubricant spray in Halfords - get some and periodically rub it into the targa seals. It does what it says, reviving the rubber and restoring its sealing ability. I do it every couple of months - the same with the roof seals on the SLK too - not only does it prevent them leaking, but it also reduces the problem of moisture on the inside of the windscreen on cold mornings. Something that has always pissed me off about every SLK I have owned.......:sneaky2:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Dont forget the window adjustment, if its not sitting tight against the rubber when closed, its likely water will find its way in and appear to be targa leaking, always seems to be the same place on mine, where the a pillar trim meets the targa at the top, water will seep down the inside of the trim and end up behind the fuse board causing all sorts of electrical issues, still need to adjust the windows on mine.

Good point Graham - and probably most likely to affect the drivers' side, since that door/window is used the most throughout the car's life!

Bingo... a major cause as w3ell as the one Jeff has posted about a few times...

so:

make sure the drain hole and tube are free of blocks and working right.

make sure they are not leaking inside the car (foot well).

check the rubber at the top near the drain plug is sealing correctly to the car (see Jeff's guide).

clean the rubbers, best with rubber restorer (helps to seal).

make sure the window is sitting tight against the rubber (this requires removing the door card, bit of a crap job but not that hard, there are two nuts with bolts that will pull/push the window runners closer to the car. Front and rear of the door.. you will have to do them different ways, the front one has a pivot point above the adjuster and the back one has the pivot below it.. if that makes sense :) )

there are also adjustments on the door but unless it's not flush it unlikely to be that.

and yes mine did leak quite a bit but have almost totally stopped since I adjusted the window.

best of luck..

In my three year ownership of this Z it never leaked or had water in the boot. It was garaged every night but was used in the rain and washed at least once a week. I fitted two new window trims to the doors from Zcenter. And the rubbers where maintained with Autoglyn rubber restorer. I would dry the Z completely out restore the rubbers then put the hose on it then check for leaks. If it is leaking badly from the Targas still then its new rubbers Stephen.

I`ve also found water coming in from the petrol filler area, seems a welded seam had been poorly done..took years to find that one.

Water in the boot shouldn't be coming from the targa.

I'd say it could be coming from the resar screen rubber, the rear lights seals or the washer jet(leaking hose).
