Well after snorkeling in the red sea last week, the missus decided she would like some tropical fish and the boys would love them too, her idea was to get some Nemo type fish because we had seen them in the sea lol, but i told her keeping salt water tropical fish is alot more involved than freshwater tropical fish.

While we were away she wasted the wifi on trawling facebay for a tank and before we got home we had bought one and was being delivered the day after we got back.

So we got as a starter set up a Marina 60 tank on a stand and after a few days of water treatment and running the pump/filter it was ready for some fish  To start we got a couple of little sword type fish ( not into the technical names yet lol ) and the boys love em and i have to say i cant wait to add more, its going to be a nice from watching the dog lick its arse:biggrin:

Im starting off with some hardy fish until we get the water tested in 10 days to make sure the environment is right, then going to be adding some molly's and plecs etc.

I know we have some members into fishing and a few keep fish, so wandering what youve got and any pics.

This is the tank, will take some pics in situe once my camera is charged

I have a marine tank. It was tricky to set up but it now needs minimal maintenance. You have to do regular partial water changes and checks. It's more like a rock pool tho. No corals and only a few fish but plenty of shrimp and crabs, and a pair of sea horses

We've had tropical fish for 2 years or so now. Took a lot of getting used to at first. They kept dying from 'white spot' but now it's a sorted and they look great. Will get some pics uo and the names of the species tomorrow when the Mrs reminds me of what we've got. The ones I know so far are

Mollies

Guppies

red rams

female fighter fish

gourami (neon blue and gold) I hate them

cherry barbs

sucker fish ( a must have for every tank)

2 or 3 different sets of tetras in groups of 4 each

look great in the living room in a nice tank. I'm begging the Mrs for some terrapins or musk turtles

I've had a fresh water tropical fish tank for nearly 15 years now. Fairly easy to maintain, not a very big tank, just 125 litres (Juwel Rio 125). I follow the juwel service schedule and buy a job lot of filters/treatments etc annually for the best price, at the time, online which is normally around £120.

I like that idea and quite exotic too, once ive become more knowledgeable, its something i may look at later.

We've got a Fluval Edge tropical tank. Thought it was good until I saw Dazverts marine tank a few weeks ago, it's stunning! I'm sure he will put a few pictures up.

So you have quite a few fish in one tank, what capacity is yours?

Sounds like alot of what we will end up with from what ive read and seen so far.

I think after a couple of years experience i would like a huge tank that fills one alcove in my front room and get some larger fish, but as a starter im more than happy

Getting the water temp and de chlorination was my first priority, i spent hours rinsing the gravel and ornaments etc and the water is now crystal clear and the first 2 fish seem quite happy and relaxed, so must have done something right lol, although getting water tested in 10 days to make sure the environment is correct before adding more.

Ive been told conflicting stories from different pet stores regarding the cleaning schedules, some say you dont need to go over board and its a money making exercise with all the cycling and chemicals, and the other says adding a couple of fish first will start the culture bacteria cycle naturally, still researching though.

Ive got a 4x2x2 marine tank but in the process of setting up a 6x2x2 sump system atm.

i have a couple of Picasso Clown fish (same as normal ones but these have white on them too) they are a pair and both grade A, anyone that know their fish will know they are nice from that. think they were about £500 the pair.

A regal Tang (Dory)

a yellow shoulder tang

a pair of Mandarins (psychedelic)

a 6 line wrasse

and a number of clean up crew (craps, shrimp star fish and snails)

as said, its pretty easy to keep now, i use a nice 4x2x2 sumo system so only really needs a partial water change, and then topping up witht he RO water (of which i have an auto top up ststem so that really takes care of that.

I have been looking in to an auto dosing system for the trace elements, as i have a lot of high end corals which was the main reason for the tank in the first place.

I always fancied getting a mahoosive tank and have been very tempted on several occasions, but where I display it is the perfect size for the tank on its stand.

I've also been tempted by a marine setup but I'm happy with the ease of maintenance that comes with this one. It probably needs around 30-60 mins of my time, per month, all in to keep it looking great.

Maybe this should be your next venture...

Wow some great pics Ian:thumbup: I would have preferred to have gone scuba diving instead of snorkeling but my other half was too scared, i told her it would be safer than snorkeling in deep water and she soon started to panic and had to be led back to the boat holding onto a life ring lol, i have to admit after swallowing a bit of the red sea i started to struggle to breath properly, hard to relax when you are starting to panic lol.

Buy yourself either the ghl auto doser or a kamoer, do not buy a marine magic it's pants. If you need help with the setup let me know.
