Yet again I am being plagued by a dodgy viscous fan that squeaks and groans whenever I start the car before I eventually get the whoosh as it starts too spin. I've put a new correct sized jap import drive belt from MJP and have had it checked and adjusted twice but it still does it so it's not the belt.

Can I just take the fkn thing off and chuck it in the bin (after giving it the good news with a lump hammer) and replace it with an electric one?

So did i, he cudnt b bothered to put it in the bin so gave it to me instead!

Jeff I think I'm in need of a new vc. As I get the same issues. Major squeal on start up when cold, for a bit then all is good.

How much for one posted please

Squeeling on start up is usually a loose belt mate. There's 3 down there so plenty of oppertunity to slip and squeal. As revs rise and heat gets into it it tends to grab and stop squeezing .

iF I TIGHTEN THEM ANY MORE THEY WILL SNAP!!

Worth considering checking the condition of the pulley's them selves.

Could be that the belt is starting to ride on the base diameter as opposed to contacting only on the angular flanks.

Also, I know it is a bit of a pain, but if the flanks are particularly polished due to slippage, it may be worth roughing them up with some course emery cloth.

You mentioned that you dash light flickers, this could be the result of belt slip due to poor pulley contact.

Ive just put another VC on and this one is just as bad! i found it in the back of the shed so im assuming its one of the many faulty ones ive removed over the last 12 years of Z ownership but i had to take the chance and give it a go. My assumptions were right, it was one of my faulty ones!

Rather than throw it away at the time i must have thought id better keep that to give away to some poor tortured soul that also has the same problem. Just like Joely p did :winkiss:

As you are changing the fan and coupling over, maybe worth running her from cold without mounting them, (only for a few seconds that is)

would be interesting to know if the problem still exists.

Will try that tomorrow

Well have just put another VC on (number 4) And a brand new jap spec alternator belt and it is still screaming like a bitch when it's cold and now even when it's warm if I stop and then set off again. Then as you drive you hear the whoosh and it's all right for a while.

What the fck is wrong with it? And just how tight are you supposed to tighten the belts? I've got them to what I would normally consider to be tight already!

I cant see a viscous even fully locked making a good and tight belt slip...

Is the belt running straight, and without the belt on has any pulleys or water pump got any play.

The viscous could be running fast after a while if the car is getting a little warm,

Even a tiny leak in the coolant system will not let it build pressure and run a little hotter,

Has above try it with the viscous off and see if it still does it...

Have you checked the idler pulley and water pump bearings?

Project 1547 - Out of the Blue

She's so fine, there's no tellin' where the money went - Simply irresistible.

And make sure you have the right waterpump pulley jap/uk different size so different belts.

Just read again... Then as you drive you hear the whoosh and it's all right for a while...

So the belt is definitely slipping and then gripping I'd blame the belt or pulley before 4viscous fans...
