Guys and girls, I know it has been said many many times before, but please check your timing belts if you don't know it's history!!!

After another great day at Mr. Lee Dent's place today, where he is busy working on my Zed, when we took the timing belt covers off, this is what we found: -

As you can see the belt is wearing very thin, and is a lot narrower than it should be, see pic of standard width belt and mine!!! We only just caught this in time, so please heed the advice of our Zed experts and keep an eye on your timing belts, as this could have ended up a lot worse for me.

No problem Gary, just shows what can happen, we reckon a few more miles and I would have been looking for a new engine. Always worth getting the timing belt checked if the history is unknown. My Zed was making no strange noises at all. So all new Zed owners take note, if you don't have a date of last timing belt change, it's worth having it done for peace of mind alone.

Very lucky indeed.....:sweatdrop:.....lol. Mr. Dent's detective work.:detective:

Just spotted in time Ian thanks for sharing mate.

Agreed......

And it definitely goes to show that unless you have had the belt changed yourself, or know for sure when it was last done, you need to get it looked at!!!

It might cost you a few hundred pounds; but that is cheaper and less hassle than requiring a new engine!!

Richard:cool:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Very lucky to find this before it was too late . I will post up the cause on Monday once I have the crank pulley off:)

I also think its a blue print belt. They are awfully made and will cause problems like snapping before they are due to be changed..

Yes extremely lucky and a bad oversight by Ian really after all this time  :nono:.

Have you recommended a good garage to him where he can get the new belt fitted Denty :tt2:.

After removal of crank pulley and various covers, we found that the timing belt had been rubbing a nice groove into the cover, as you can see i n the picture. This was likely caused by some idiot prying the cover off at some point, bent it, but just refitted with a nice dent in it, hence causing the damage to the belt. Lee Dent, I salute you sir.....:bow::bow::bow: Thank you for saving my engine.

Your engine was being cleaned yesterday too Tom, is looking good buddy. I know we only just caught that timing belt in time, could have been a new engine job if Lee hadn't checked it out....lol
