why is it that when you start your car the oil pressure is right up then when warm its right down . and everybody says that these gadges dont work. but if the oil gadge didnt work then surley it wouldnt show good pressure when cold and it would just not work. or am i missing somthing?

My god, are you in for the record for the most threads started!?!?!?!?!!?

Oil pressure is high at idle because it's less viscous. Oil is less viscous when cold. Once it's warmed up, it becomes more viscous and therefore pressure is low and you'll see your needle return to a low reading when up to normal operating temperature.

Cold oil is less viscuous (thicker) and thus you get a higher pressure.

A gauge is only as good as the sender it's attached to. I think the main problem with the oem gauge is that the senders tend to fail. Aftermarket oil pressure gauges tend to be connected to a sender on a sandwich plate between the engine and the oil filter and therefore don't use the oem sender.

Dude, don't confuse him anymore. His gauge is doing what it should be doing! :wack:  ;)

Let that be a lesson to me - brain in gear before posting :)

BTW, I just found if you google in a devious way, you can find the forum archive with posts going back to 2002! http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/archive/index.php/f-2.html

and this one made me laugh 'cos it didn't half remind me of ... http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?14281-FAO-Nelson-Mainfella

Everything seems more comprehensible on the forum of old!

ive been looking for the old archives for weeks...cheers Gio

How is it that you know words like temerity, a word that rarely gets used, yet the rest of the content takes time to divulge? :) ;)

Yes indeed. I am far from obtuse and really can not be bothered with all the attention to detail. I am not at school now! And quite like being lazy on this forum. Funny how some people get so truculent, after all its only a forum and meant to be relaxing, discussing the thread topic. Each to thier own I guess. I am not ostentatious.lol

That's as bad a tautology as Socialist Worker

Pardon my intrusion, but as cold oil is thicker, should that not say "more viscous?" As in "Honey is more viscous than water, since it is thicker.....?"

Richard:shifty:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Yes. I had this the wrong way round. viscosity is a substance's resistance to pour. My excuse was that I was typing it from my phone whilst shopping.

Dude, you CAN write good English! It's so much nicer for everyone else to read! :) You're like the combination of two extremes!

Only for Newtonian fluids and most honey varieties are non-Newtonian thixotropic. And blood is only sometimes thicker than water because it's a pseudoplastic non-Newtonian (shear thinning) where viscosity decreases with increased shear rate.

BTW while googling for references I found this one which cheered me no end http://www.seesawmagazine.com/viscosity_pages/viscosity_5.html

Thats really funny. Thats what my other half says, i go from one extream to the next. But thanks.

viscoelastic Having both viscous and elastic qualities. Adhesives are viscoelastic materials, combining the characteristics of both liquids and solids.

viscosity A fluid's resistance to flow. The higher the viscosity, the greater a liquid's ability to resist flow.

viscous Resistant to flow. A liquid that is more viscous is less likely to flow.

And i might add if we are going to be pedantic, then pour is an action. SEMANTICS!

Funkysi your a funny man and its post like these that make the forum a fun place to be. That said im going back to my lazy self. right getting back on topic one would assume after some major digressing that shells/bearings at the bottom end of the engine would also inprove oil pressure?

At what age did you get the ability to nitpick and shop at the same time and even better also have the ability to front a complete fail with excuses as good as this:rofl::rofl:...just bend over and take your medicine like a good lad:yes:
