As title, anyone done this.

I have a stripped down 96 shell which I plan to respray but wanting my project done

properly I was planning to take it to a local garage which can do shot blasting.

Loads of videos on the net of getting it done but I've also read that it can distort the panels.

What's everyone's thoughts?

We have a guy on 350z-uk who does his own shot-blasting in his shed.

He's never mentioned any panel distortion.

Having used shotblast on the boats, I would suspect distorted panels are a result of too high a pressure and being too close to the object.

So long as you have faith in the person you choose and they have a good reputation, you should be ok.

Why do you want to get it shot blasted?? Is it rusty all over??

Do you mean shot blast??

Or grit blast/ If so what size grit?? And what type??

Or bead blast with crushed glass beads

Or soda blast??

I always thought sand blasting for removing paint from metal? you can wear the corners easily tho! next thing it ll come back anodised in a chrome plate! :)

Can you not get it acid dipped? Sure there will be somewhere down your way that could do it. Means stripping it to a bare shell but that will get rid of everything but good metal!

I'd get it acid dipped, all the rusty bits you can't see are attacked, then you can get it dipped in zinc I think to rust proof everything, I have ground down the entire underside and I won't be doing that again! Acid dipping next time!

D a mate you dont want to get a body shot blast , chassis yes body no. and for acid dip good luck finding someone with o swimming pool full of acid , it ant going to happen in the real world we mere mottols live in . the plating process after on that scale is hudge. and as for removing all the rubber bonding ect between the panels. nice idea though. its a da and a few days work to get a car back down to were you want it. and if you do have rust you woulnt want to treat with acid anyway yourll want to cut out and replace. good luck. if your going for that sort of repair to the shell then i can point you into the right direction with some contacts/ mates who are still working on the custom car seen but be warned to speak to your bank manager over dinner before. lol.

There are a few places that do acid dipping! One of the guys i know through the VW's got his camper dipped before a full resto, was down south though. Not sure if anyone does it Scotland.

It would probably cost less overall to buy a fresh rust free import in gret nick

By the time you either blast or dip + coat, then repair, prep, paint and reassemble

You are into heavy money.

I know of a bare shell mk1 capri resto- SPL (google them) took about £1000 to strip

and then approx another £700 for electrophoretic primer dip. Then repairs.....then paint

Ouch! Beautiful but eye watering expense.

Good luck with what you decide mate.

There was a recent discussion on acid dipping on zclub. Various people including myself pointed out it can cause more problems than it solves. As gaz said soda blasting is good.

In my opinion, I'd question the need to do it compared with the sheer economics of it......

...Perhaps if I was restoring an E-type or a DB5 which might end up with a resale value of £100k+, then it's worth the investment. And assuming I had such a car in my "collection" then I'd most likely have the loose change to afford such a luxury.

However is it worth it on your stripped 300zx shell? Maybe, if it is not going to cost you the earth - but if the shell is good, with no traces of rust, then why bother? A decent spray-shop should guarantee their work anyway; so make sure they would rectify any defects that materialise within a reasonable time scale at no cost to you...

My general thoughts were to do the engine bay, around the sills then lastly the tailgate.

i wanted to strip her down as the last paint job was shocking and is full of this thick runs

and various other items stuck in the paintwork; as well as it generally looking like a black

orange if you know what I mean.

if I'm going to spend some money on a half descent paint job I want the underlying panels

to be smooth and defect free as possible.

Cheapest option mate, nitromors.

strip all old paint off and da down to metal........
