I guys,

I have 2 zeds one is a donor, the one im keeping is an h reg and the one im breaking is an r reg.

Can I put the r reg plate on the h reg I've used nearly all the bits from it.

Was reading a thread about personal plates and if I had the r reg plate could use a lot newer plates etc.

If its possible what would I have to do...

Any help appreciated,

Thank you.

First off, are either of them MOT'd? To legally transfer a plate, the car the plate is coming from has to be MOTd. In addition, you can't put a newer plate on an older chassis. If you want to declare year of donor parts and chassis built, you'd need to get it inspected by VOSA.

So you're breaking a 98-spec car!? Or was it one of those DVLA errors that occurred when people registered the date of import as the date of manufacture?

I think it must be an import error cause it dont look newer and has older interior etc, im an mot tester so could likely test both cars,

Not to fussed if it can't be done but I've used nearly every thing off the breaker so was thinking can I not say I re shelled it and want to use original plates, not just change plates like a personal plate.

Which shell are you using (with the VIN plate attached)?

The shell ive used is the h registration, the one u had the hub off is the r reg.

I think you'd have to prove to VOSA that this is what you did for the identities to be transferred if it was at all possible.

So probably not worth it then, im not to fussed with registration but thought if it was easy enough it would make the zed look newer and use newer personal plates.

I think you'd be walking into a lot of ball ache, but give VOSA a call or speak to your local DVLA. The problem I see you having is that legally, you can't transfer identities unless you're getting it all approved by VOSA - this happens generally with kit cars and such like, secondly, to transfer a plate to your existing chassis, your car would need to be a 1997/98 year of manufacture or newer; despite the error on the V5, they will look at the year of the plate and the ID of the car you're going to be putting it on to - your plate is newer than your car, something you can't get round by registration alone.

You would in effect be making an older car appear newer (the major component still being used being the shell and the registered VIN).

The relevant bit from the authorities is this:

Thanks for all the help but looks a bit of a nightmare to be honest,

I think it would just be easier to leave it and buy a plate that is allowed. Bloody cars lol...

i dont suppose u need the the vosa not liking somthing or cookng up and u land up with a q plate cas thatl be rubbish. on a nother matter let me know mate how much the cost of them shocks cost to post mate. cheers buddy. and keep up the good work.

If you went ahead and swapped indentities, as mentioned above, it then becomes a real minefield. Passing off an older car as newer etc (even though Dvla already did this -in error-with your R reg car).

I also considered doing it when breaking a newer Z. It's a practice known as "ringing" and usually only done by car thieves! !

The car could end up with a Q plate, or worse still- it gets crushed or you might not have a problem at all. Still risky and probably not worth the hassle as the car doesnt have any other features of the 98 model.

I would not have just changed the plates over, would have gone the route they wanted,

But it looks like it cant be done unless a (new) shell is used, so Im not even gonna bother trying lol, just though would be nice to have a newer plate,

Thanks for all the replies.

I would say if you are that bothered about people knowing how old your car is then stick a 50 quid irish plate on it.
