A little background would probably be good here.

I got my zx in 2010 just before the first child was born and coped quite well until number 2 came along earlier this year. Then the slight moaning from her indoors became more like ultimatums (ultimati?) and I had to get a bigger car . 1 RS6 later and the Mrs is happy and I'm at least happy with the power.

We've now moved back to england and the ZX is filling the garage much to annoyance of the ball and chain. She wants it gone  to make space for a bike but I have a get out clause! I want to do some racing and can convince the trouble I need to keep my lovely ZX (which I love) if she can be my track car.

So.... HELP! Is there any racing I can do with my fairlady without having to spend millions? Not really interested in anything that doesn't include head to head racing.... time trials or drifting just don't really do it for me.

The alternative being she will have to go (the car, not the Mrs though I may change my mind at the last second on that one! :gunsmilie:)

With out costing a packet, time trials is probably the best you'll do. Racing requires a good budget and time and as a dad with a 1 and 3 year old that's something i haven't got myself.

Good luck with the sale

Did you relocate to/from New Zealand? Think I've seen your car for sale elsewhere bud.

Take it racing for sure :-)

aaaargh!

i can probably go 10-20k a year?

Ok, so that's a reasonable budget

Should be able to go racing for that. I would surget you look into motorclub racing and go from there (BRDC, 750MC, etc)

Came back from Bali.... I put it up on autotrader in the summer (to keep the wife happy) and got a nibble but it was the day before i went back over so nothing came of it

BRDC and 750MC, thanks zed-racer, I'll look into it :thumbup1:

there is only the "Roadsports " class on 750MC that might accept a 300ZX. Its not currently on the list tho. It does have 350Z S14 and S15 on the eligible list. enquiries from other models are invited.

Do you already have a race licence and experience??

What model 300 do you have??

Is it alrady "race prepped2???

I have a twin turbo 2+2 targa..... now I say it I guess that targa would be an issue in any motorsport wouldn't it?

I don't have a race license but it isn't tricky to get a national B, plenty of experience racing karts up to rotax sort of level (90mph) and driving all sorts of racing kit, up to and including a couple of F1 cars

yes it would.

You would need to replace them with something non glass. Composite/ally etc.

The Nippon challenge came to mind but the 300 wont be competitive due to the power/weight formula used.

a big chunk of your ist year budget would be taken up in prepping the car I think.

Cage. brakes seats harnesses. fire exting . suspension. wheels n tyres.

You just cant go racing on a "modest budget" in a 300

Check out the two Time Attack weapons in this section of the forum to get some ideas of the eyewatering costs .

And Time Attack isnt "heads up " either

Being competitive is a must..... I couldn't go racing expecting to lose, that sounds like a crappy pastime!

Prepping the car wouldn't have to come from the first years budget but if it's going to cost that much it might be easier to just try something different and :surrender: admit defeat in the 'keep the Z' battle. 20k would get me an RX150 to take to the rallycross scene and that looks like a lot of fun

Thanks for the tips anyway guys, i thought (was hoping) there might be something out there that would suit a relatively untampered ZX

Covered that already...

The 300GT class is out due to weight limit.

To be competitive in "Super GT" someone would need the kind of spend you and James have done.

that doesnt come under the heading "reasonable budget" LOL!!!

For that sort of money you could extend your garage, keep the zed and use it to go out for lovely drives in the country, or summat, in the summer. Or anything your wife can get involved in!!

She'd qualify for the 300gt class surely?

Yes these are minimum weights Pete's getting old :) You could be racing against GTO's etc Steve Lawtey and Mark Firth were racing in the 300GT class and I am confident you would also get in that class. Go on the forum and see what's what and I think you'll find it would be a perfect fit :) I can get you in touch with Steve if you wanna chat with him about it just let me know.

Yes these are minimum weights Pete's getting old

Bob you are missing the point Im making. I KNOW they are minimum weights.

The point is at 1500+kg and only 300hp the car wont be competivive as its way OVER the weight of other competitive cars.

Of course its eligible.

  • Author

yeah, she would be way over weight..... not sure how much i could strip out though. Probably not nearly enough. Are there 300zx's in this class already bob? Any idea what I'd be up against?

  • Author

sorry, you said already... gto's which are pretty similar anyway.

IMG_0422[1].jpgI had a look at this years results and I see that Steve and Mark were actually in SGT. Timings wise the 300GT and SGT are pretty similar and best times are split 50/50. It isn't time attack and I would think the costs for both these classes are similar however they will still be pretty high. Running a 300ZX around the track without any mods at all? Well, you'll be slow due to the weight but that's just as well because if you go too fast you'll destroy the engine or at the very least get black flagged for burning oil/black smoke :) As a minimum remove/re-route PCV and try and drop a bit of weight. It'll be tough to compete in either class having looked at the times at Brands Indy (which we did in the final round) the best times were within half a second of mine and that's with 20 other cars on track head to head.

If you really want to get on track and go fast why not just buy my ZX10R which is going on ebay soon. Carbon wheels weighs in at 160kg and with 175 rwhp it will be competitive at club events right now. What I used to do was I had a set of race fairings and plastic which I would put on for the track and put the nice stuff back on for the road. I've only used my bike twice this year and it will be sad to see it go but I need the funds for my slickie and I'm getting too old to run them both :(

That is a beautiful machine mate! Not right for me for a couple of reasons though

Reason 1 is that I'm a big girl on a bike and don't have a sack big enough to really compete on 2 wheels, bikes are for fun for me only. I'm pretty quick with 4 wheels though. Also my old back can't deal with a bike like that any more

Reason 2 is I just bought a bike this morning. Went to test drive a Z1000sx and a fazer 1000. Liked the Z1000, it pulls like a train from 2000rpm!! Absolutely the most incredible performance from the bottom an mid range i've ever experienced. The fazer however was a far better bike, smoother power delivery, more comfortable riding position and seat, more nimble, and when you wind that R1 engine up it screams at you and takes off like a sports bike. I loved it so much I bought it on the spot
