Have you given him a ring mate? I had to when I got mine, he's very helpful. Failing that all I can think of is either MJP or a doner zed from one of our breakers.

I tried MJP last time, but honestly no disrespect to the guy, i couldn't seem to get a direct answer as to the costs. i got told plenty of times that they would take a while to get in as they were coming from japan, but from what i did manage to understand, it would of cost me the best part of a replacement car, and that was before fitting and painting.

So im still none the wise as to if he knew what i was on about, from what other people have said its equates to around £150 per side, yet this was no where near the price quoted by MJP iirc. so not sure where people are getting their parts or prices from. Surely those who have already had this done, should know, but people seem to be staying quite on the matter. would rather fix the car when it comes to it, rather than having to break and sell due to rotten sills.

Should we not as a club have VERY good knowledge of this kind of thing? If a new member came here looking for help sourcing body parts like that, it would very embossing for the reply to be "er dunno boss, either buy oem at mega silly money or there may be a chap on ebay"

Let's encourage the guy get him on here as a trader, we NEED traders like that.

The inner sill is a very simple component, the outter also pretty simple with the right tooling. I think it's time we started hunting people with the skills or services we need, rather than relying on them to come to us and be charged for that service.

Very very VERY well said that man!

It may be but not many people have an English wheel and the skill to operate it.

You also would need a perfect panel in the first place to copy.

The person who used to operate the Ebay account mentioned is NOT the panel maker.

The panel maker would rather slit his throat then come on to a forum and pay to advertize.

So its a great thought but it will never happen.

He makes panels for other cars too thru another agent and they fetch proper prices without quibble so he will only ever make a 300 panel if he has nothing else to do.

Here is a very complicated and exquisitely made two piece S30 repair panel that I doubt he will ever do again

And if anyone says its pretty simple then please make me the matching RHS one.:innocent:

Watching my Z disintegrate on my driveway!!!

I see, what a shame. There must be something we can do to encourage easier access.

As for those pieces, they actually arnt very complex. I wouldn't use an English wheel though, I'd use a press to create the left hand piece and similarly to create the swagde on the the right hand one then some different tooling on a break press to create the bends. Obviously the tooling drives up the price, however if your making lots, once you've made it each new one esp that left hand pannel will take all of 30 seconds to create.

This is simular stuff to what we knocked up in college, amongst lobster backs and square to rounds and all that stuff. I actually quite enjoyed sheet metal work. It's dirty shitty work though and I earn more with clean hands these days.

So basically what people are trying to say is, that apart from MJP and getting it imported in, the other 2 options is, hope the body shop that does the repair is dab handy at fabricating the panel or at least being able to weld a half decent attempt on, or sell / split the car for parts as cant get it fixed.

Be nice to know the actual price from MJP, but as i said, ive asked before, once on his selling page and once on the phone and it all got rather confusing as to what the complete price would be. which is no good when i have to actually budget for these parts.

I'm also gonna need a set of arches in near future as mine are starting to bubble, so it would be useful to figure this out.

Is there anywhere in the US that sells the panels? Or any traders on here who could make some if were to do a group buy?

I'm sure there are lots of people who would buy these just to have them for if and when they are needed. If we could source a good quality product this would be a great group buy!

Can't imagine I'll EVER need them, but agreed, it would good to have an aftermarket source as these cars continue to get older and turn back to the ferrous ore from whence they came!

It's hilarious when you think about, if you want to bolt on all mannor of fibreglass ugly there's sources a plenty. If you want a honest looking splitter or a piece of structural bodywork. No one has them. I was banging on about this a whole back, we need to start looking at ways to get panels else the car will never last. Do you see the old fords suffer like this? No repro parts are very common. I'm surprised no one has ever made a fibreglass rear hatch, think of the weight loss and all those rusty tailgates gone!

These are the sort of things that separate a forum from an owners club, we should be at the front line of parts sourcing. Instead I'm sorry to say it but often this place is more like a zed grave yard. People buying them up and selling them on for parts like scrap metal merchants. Anyways that's my two pence worth.

Amen dude, amen! It's a sad truth that one; it is ALWAYS the strange ungainly stuff that's available and popular. Maybe it's because of lack of choice as I can't see that many people have bad taste (yes, I know, taste is very much 'subjective'). I have never worked out why the nice stuff was always hard to get, yet stuff like the wings west petticoat bodykit was as easy to source as a tin of beans.

Escort Racing in the US or someone like that make fibreglass hatches and doors. Jaffa has these items on his Z. I wouldn't bother unless you're building a track or 1/4 mile weapon though. I certainly wouldn't want GRP doors on a road car without a multipoint roll cage (which I'd really only bother with on a track - the weight you take out of a door, you'd end up putting in a cage anyway). GRP doors hold as much structural integrity as a digestive biscuit. Also, GRP fit and finish is never that great. Like I said, awesome for a track car though.

I agree with you Steve,

The trouble is, it's very hard to get someone to actually make the parts needed; as they would have a very limited number of customers for them and would struggle to make profit; or have to charge prohibitively high prices!

It's easy for the classic Fords, MGBs and Jags as there are still so many of those cars around; loads were built and there's a big enough market for someone to supply parts at reasonable prices. The Nissan 300zx didn't sell in massive numbers here in the UK and was taken off sale in Europe after barely 4 years. Although I guess the way forward might be to look towards the USA - or even Japan - but that might still prove difficult as in those locations, the cars do not suffer from corrosion as much as they will here!!!

It would also be great if one of us had the time and dedication to conduct research into it for everyone's benefit. But once again, we all have day jobs and as committee, we run the club in our spare time!! Our best option at the moment is if one of our traders could source these parts which will become so vital in future; to preserve our cars a little longer.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I am over at Z1 Motorsports again over the Christmas period, I'll have a chat with the guys there about body panels. Agreed that the majority of their cars do not experience the same harsh conditions as UK cars. Even cars from the north of the US have often spent their lives in a number of states, so exposure to harsh conditions is less generally, but there are rusty Z32s out there and the catchment is huge, so it might be worth looking at a limited production run of sills and wheel arches. I must say, I see a LOT less rotten ones in the US, but I tend only to visit southern midwest, desert and south western states where rainfall is generally less and their winter months either shorter or totally non-existent. I am sure up by the Great Lakes and the northern US states, there are plenty of rotters.

Indeed, that would be very helpful for a lot of people :thumbup1:
