Guys,

Did a long journey up north a few days ago to visit my parents, and noticed my car's vibration has come back a bit stronger. I mostly feel it through the steering wheel around 70-80mph (and felt it very strongly once while braking), but it's there in very small amounts a lot of the time. Had the wheels balanced a while ago which helped but didn't get rid of all the vibration, and like I say, its back stronger now.

I reckon it might be the front discs, what do you reckon? I'm about to head out to a local garage and get it looked at, so I was just wondering if anyone had a average price off-hand for a pair of front discs? Any other ideas on a possible cause would be welcome too.

Thanks in advance

Got the same on mine and have just changed the front discs, had all the suspention checked and nothing wrong their, next thing to check is going to be the prop, sounds strange to me but my mechanic said he's seen it before.

Vibration while braking could be caused by either:-

Warped disc

Worn out tension rod bushes

Worn top link bushes

Vibration under cruise is USUALLY caused by:-

centre prop bearing worn

gearbox rear mount worn

diff mounts worn

(all assuming wheels are balanced corectly)

Saying that, how many times have people posted on here about having their wheels balanced incorrectly...

I would check the tension rod bushes out first of all ;)

I have a weird vibration coming thru the gear stick it's worse in 3rd and 4th gear

and it rattles quite happily when I'm in 5th cruising up the motorway...

hope nothing gonna drop off

I know my wheels are cool cos just got new tyres, balanced and tracking done (it feels a lot better to drive and the steering is straight now) wehhey

Would it be best for me to get a to check the tension rods first then prop bearing

is this expensive re: time consuming etc ?

help appreciated

thanks

Emero - that sounds like it could well be the gear stick bushes ;) How 'tight' is the lever???

my techie knowledge is naff

all I know is I have a closed ratio gear stick (I think that's what u call it)

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Had the car looked at and there did turn out to be a very slight warp in the drivers-side disc, though the mechanic reckoned this wouldn't be enough to cause the problem I had. He did suggest though that any friction caused by it would heat up over time and maybe lead to the brake sticking a little and hence to some vibration  That might be of interest when others get similar problems, maybe :) Had the wheels rebalanced, anyway, and the bushes lubricated. Off to give it a blast and see if that's helped.

Mine used to do exactly the same thing...

Took it to a 'good' local Tyre fitting placed got the Tyres swapped over (Left to right) and rebalanced..

Its now as smooth as silk!!

Be careful as some Tyre fitters cant exactly balance wide tyres correctly....

Spot on, Dan.

Had a drive yesterday after getting a simple rebalance of the front wheels and the vibration is completely gone - the car is driving better than it ever has in the two years I've had it!

Moral of the story: even if you've had a wheel balance, try taking it somewhere else for a 'second opinion' - hopefully somewhere with a newer and higher-precision balancer.

Thanks again for the advice guys :)
