Changed my spark plugs for the first time myself rather than a garage. Bit fiddly as you know all went well strut brace off ballance bar off and replaced again.

Quite pleased with myself I fired it up and it ran lovely on all 6. But with a whistle from the ballance bar on the drivers side. I had used some black gungey liquid gasket stuff but it was sucking a bit. I decided to go a bit tighter on the 2 bolts and snap! I did not feel I was tightening particularly hard.

Defeat snatched from the jaws of victory!

What do people reckon. It's definitely a garage job now.

The plugs looked good to me..

Other than the fuely one and the one with a bit of oil on the washer they all looked like...

plugs look ok from the pic ... they may smell of fuel depending on how long u just ran the engine before taking them out

regarding the stud .. get some mole-grips on the rest of it and take it out of the plenum and then just use a Bolt

Good news then. I shouted *****cks very loudly shut the bonnet and got in out the cold so didn't do much investigation. The car had stood a week but I think they were fine. Hopefully a straight forward fix tomorrow.

Liquid gasket of or should it have rubber rings. It seemed to have flush flat rings in there. And looking into the plenum there was some oil in there. Some not loads.

the sealing rings are Round formed but over time they do get a flat spot on them ...

really u should replace ... a little sealant isnt going to hurt

as for the oil in the plenum ... long as its not sloshing around and only like a residue it be fine

Personally, I would go for new O rings mate. Sounds like yours have collapsed.

Worth it in the long run.

I get any o rings from my local agricultural engineer.

Plenum ones plus a spare set = £2 (that's with a 50p tip) ;)

Yeah, as mark says, get some mole grips on it and it will come out. Well worth replacing the o rings as well :)

Plus VAT and postage - so nearer £25 matey.....

And good luck with the stud removal....

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

There metric size O rings and can be obtained by the bucket load of mixed for pennies via the bay of pigs...as for the stud ide use a roller stud extractor as iff you chew it up with vice grips then its a drill out job...i use this type and there worth there weight in gold..

Think I have sorted it. Got loads of o rings from a hydraulics place and a new tube of gasket. They were all imperfect fits but pretty close. Got the stud out and replaced it with a regular bolt. A combination of new rings old rings and gasket seems to be working.

Fired up on six but after a minute of idle violently dropped a cylinder something it's not done in a long time. Prodded all the coil packs and it recovered but don't know if it was a loose coil. Probably a glob of liquid gasket ended up on a plug gap! It sounded like a rear cylinder.

I turned it off gonna let it settle for 20 mons then carefully re-animate it from its 2 weeks parked up.

Hope it holds boost.

For future reference........

Toolstation is £8.71 for 419 piece 'o' ring set.... just did my balance bar with them and there are perfect fit ones in there....

I used 2 x R25 = 33mm dia. x 3.53mm thickness and 1 x R12 = 18mm dia. x 2.62mm thickness...

Well when it starts leaking in a couple of weeks I'll do just that.

Until then... The car is working 100 percent. There is no smiley to represent the massive grin i had on my face driving about in the sun. Having not been in it for a while the car is wicked. Very happy.

Have some rep for the help guys :-)

I bet Phutumsch could find one ;) lol

Hey up bud,

I take it that you don't work on that big yellow Sig picture. Go and see on of the Techies on Sqn or in depth maintenance and they will be able to help you out with the stud extraction and possible o-ring replacement and if they are nice like me, they'll let you keep the tool, lol.

No no no :) wouldn't let me wave a spanner at an aircraft, I just kneel in the door and talk about what's going on.

Techies are ace, I used speed tape to seal a boost pipe that had split on my turbo technics Capri! And a rolls royce endoscope camera thing for looking into Gnome engines to get a wire through my firewall.

(I have since found a far easier route lol)
