I've been doing a bit of touching up of the bodywork on my old volvo workhorse and it appears I've left the masking tape on too long! It looks like some of it will be a nightmare to remove, especially the glue residue. Has anyone got any top tips, apart from not leaving it on so long!?

Use some Tardis or similar to remove the residue left behind.

Then go buy some quality decorators tape. Low tack stuff is best.

Dont buy decorators tape .. its to Wax'y and the edge is not straight ... slightly jagged

go to a Paint Motor factors and buy there Blue masking tape

its for 24hrs made of a thin plastic stretch type and leaves good edges

and will not react with Water or 2k based paints

brake cleaner, white board cleaner etc will fetch off the residue with ease :)

Used decorator's tape supplied by my mate in the trade for years. Not waxy, and has a perfectly straight edge. *shrugs*

Cheers for the replies, I've just ordered some tardis off eBay. Strangely, the tape was bought from an automotive paint supplier and made by 3M. I did leave it on over two weeks though!

I had this on my 300 when I got it painted. The painters left the masking tape on for almost 12 months!!!! It was a nightmare to get all the residue removed.

Oooh, messy!! I'd go with WD40 or methylated spirits - neither will harm the paint and, as Mikey says, give the area a polish afterwards. I'd use Autoglym SRP, followed by a coat of wax....

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I know JP..... Just thought I'd sneek it in.... LOL!! ;)

I think the point is you're supposed to tell him 'how' you removed it! ;)

I always dab the sticky side on my jeans or something to take a bit of the tackyness out of it
