I have that new bush to go in, I have gt85'd and wire brushed the hell out of the end of the arm, finally got the nut off and stuff but can not move the arm off the bush.

 

I exposed the inboard end of the arm but don't want to dismantle things I don't need to. Does it just need a bloody good pull. Then there is the matter of getting the bush out of the hub.

 

All advice greatly appreciated.

Thank you, that is what I'll do then, but how do I get the toe arm off? Slacken the adjuster then pull towards the back of the car? Didn't want to mess up my toe settings.

You could try the old; Screw the nut back on to be level with the top of the bolt and give it a smack with a hammer trick. I really struggled getting mine off and in the end had to get the garage to do it for me. Maybe someone else has better advice and would be able to help more. Best of luck with it.

leave it really soak overnight if you have then brute force and ignorance.. :-)

A will not go right, not with all my strength I have pulled muscles trying.

I have loosened B, to no avail.

Do I need to take it off at C?

This is stupid 3 and a half hours I've been on this drive.

Cheers medallion man, well I've had a cup of tea and a chocolate bar, I'm angry and I have two big stillsons, that assembly is coming off.

I just bent the toe arm trying to push it off with a scissor jack :headvswal

 

I am not a mechanic, I'm an optimist on a drive with a knackered back end.

Ball joint splitter from Halfords or similar, 20 second job with one of these, they do go with a little bang though so don`t have your face too close.

If they are anything like mine were, the bl**dy hammer won. (or a combination of the two?)

 

Also, have you checked for play at the rack? usually they wear before the ball joint.

I would recommend changing both ends mate, I had to in the end so as to get rid of excessive wheel movement.

 

Also, I was given some very helpful tips on removal and re fitting.

Happy to share when you get to the point.

Yeah the hammer worked. And I gave the inboard end a good jiggle about and it seemed solid. Even if it didn't need replacing it bloody well does now lol. I stopped when it got dark, tomorrow I'm gona take the whole hub off and take it down to a garage for them to press it out. There is no room to get any good force on it and I can't pull on the nackered threaded bar.

 

What an absolute arse that has been!

When pressing the ball joint out, add a little heat to the ally.

It will help ease the press fit. The last thing you want to do is score the bores.

I left my hub on and used heat and a gear puller once I had ground the front shoulder off.

 

When it comes to popping the new ones in, I would strongly recommend you put them in a sealed food bag lightly oiled and leave the in the freezer over night. When you are ready to put them in, warm the arm up so that it is too hot to touch and quickly pop them in. They should go straight home up-to the shoulder.

Bit of physics is all it needs then you reckon.

 

So carefully grind the rearward lip off, heat it up, smack the thing out towards the coilover.

 

Then heat the hole, cool the bush and slip it in. Do I need to buy a gear puller I just wasted 12 quid on a useless bush press, I'm sure I'll use it some time.

I am planning to spend an hour first thing in the morning when I'm not knackered and cold trying to get it out. When I don't manage I'll take both hubs off and take them to a garage with the new bushes. Hopefully the redwine 300 method will work, because I bet the rest of the hub is pretty well on there after 23 years.

Why not get the garage to press the new balljoint in for you as well mate?

 

I did try this on my first attamept, but the flange is faily weak and it distorted under the load.

I may have had it out of square mind.

Would recommend the shrink fit personally. If you get the temperatures correct, it just pops in.

 

 

I think my gear puller may still have some life left in it. You are welcome to borrow it if you want.
