When I turn on the car, it takes anywhere at least 20 minutes for the car to reach temp while just sitting there, but as soon as I start driving it starts overheating. I replaced the thermastat when I installed my new radiator, but it's still the same. Should I try a sensor?

Was it doing this before the Radiator swap?-how's it overheating,on the gauge or boiling up?

Sounds like a sticking stat...its not showing on the gauge as warm because theres no water getting past the sensor

It was doing it before the rad swap.

I just changed the thermostat and it was doing the same thing.

Blocked heater matrix maybe? Any strange noise coming from the water pump? And was it fully bled when you changed the rad and put new coolant in?

It overheating on the gauge and when I check all the lines you can feel that they're hot.

well the gauge sender must be goosed then...go and buy one there only pennies mate (small single spade one) on the right of the 2

No strange noise from the water pump and it's bled properly. I'm going to try the gauge sender since it's the cheap.

Try leaving the rad cap off until it gets hot, if its overheating ie possible head gasket then it will bubble like a good en. if the gauge has shot up and no bubbling or after the finger dip test  in the rad cap hole, then likely a sensor.

Ideally getting it plugged into to datascan, scantech or consult would be the best option.

If possible plug into the ecu and see what temp the ecu temp signal is and what the dash gauge gauge shows ( If you only have the factory gauge in the dash I would get an aftermarket)

- The water lines wil get hot when the car is warmed up. But check if the house out from the engine is hot. (the lower one if I don't remember wrong).

- And make sure you don't have air in the system. Find a steep hill or jack up the front and run the car with the fan on max warm and air to get the air out. (run the car and refill intill the fan kicks in at about 100-105 ceclius)

On ebay you can find some chemical solution you put on top of the radiator to check for head gasket leaks (don't remember what it is called) but I wouldnt bother unless you have excessive smoke from the exhaust

Took her into a shop to see if they what could figure it out, and they said it was either a turbo or blown head gasket. I don't have any smoke coming from the exhaust and if it was a blown head gasket she'd be a driving different. I'm going to try switch the gauges out next and see if that helps.

DO NOT TAKE IT TO ANY mechanic that isn't familiar with Zeds... it will just cost you a lot of money and won't get fixed.

is it blowing water into the overflow?

is it loosing water?

is there oil in the water or water in the oil?

have you checked the connector for the ecu temp sender unit? ( the two prong unit)

what coolant are you using?

was the rad swap for a new rad and new rad cap?

I second that statement.

Do your self a favor, you do not need to be blowing white smoke to have a blown head gasket, it doesnt even have to be idling rough, a small tear in the gasket is enough.

Get on ebay and buy your self a block tester kit. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UNIVERSAL-BLOCK-TESTER-KIT-FOR-GASKETS-CYLINDER-HEADS-BT500-/151046876264?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item232b186c68

who ever said you shouldnt bother, no disrespect, but yes you should bother, it will save a lot of time and effort if you know what condition the HG is actually in, over heating as i found out 2 years ago can come from a number of area's and the first and foremost area to check out is the head gasket. so get that done first.

If the test comes back fine, then we can move on to less expensive and easier solutions for you to fix.

Where did you take it to Panda?

I am pretty local to you and can offer a hand next week if you like.

Alz.

+1 Sniffer test is the best........

Don't waste time and money on standard mechanics or even "Japanese specialists" if your at a loss take it to a z32 specialist. Jeff or jimmer are top notch. Sounds like you need to bleed the system again.

Well, I got the test kit and it looking like a head gasket. Does the motor have to come out? If it does, what else would be recommended to do since it'll be out. I will be getting the 120k service done.

What a shame mate, just remember these engines are comprised of an aluminium head with a cast block. So you need to make sure the head is still flat.

Head gasket is possible in situe, so they say. But honestly your life will be a lot easier if you do it on the bench. Start looking at the gaskets required, they will cost more than you first thought. Buying non oem ones is a recipe for headaches, don't do it.

Anyone know a garage that'll do head gasket around brandon? Or anywhere near cambridge? I'd like someone who knows how to work a z.

Nothing 'local' really unfortunately, you only really have 2 options:

1: Take it to the local butchers and risk coming home with a load of sausages, some pork ribs in tasty sauce, some lemon chicken, a big bill and still having to use option 2...

2: Take it further afield to Zedworld or Powerzed with known experience on the shortfalls on the Z.

I would recommend option 2.

Couldn't agree more really, Zed worlds rates are very good and you can be sure you won't need to mess about, book it in, have it fixed, and come home!
