Hello, a sad newbie here, I brought a 300zx tt yesterday and didn't even make it the hour drive home, the temperature shot up and oil pressure down and had no power I feel like crying. I think I was stitched up. It was fine until I got to the motorway the gave up! I'm probably going to need to sell for spares or repairs now, I'm gutted.

I'll have a look today and see what's going on, I suspect head gasket.

Hi and welcome mate did you buy from trade or private.

Private

Doesn't sound good, the stock clock gauges are not very accurate, oil pressure gauge may not work so well when engine gets warm, as for the temp one you wont really know from that until it's too late I'm afraid, did it go well above the centre mark ?

Have you any signs of water loss ?

Had it running today and water is gushing out when it got warm, looks like from water pump.

I'm not positive but I think you might still be legally in a position to take it back and get you're money.

speak to legal aid.

how much did you pay?

also FYI.. you have to be a paid member on here to sell anything, so if you are thinking of doing that you need to become a paid member.

all the best.

Hi and welcome to the club....

Sorry to hear of your woes mate; sounds like you have a waterpump failure if coolant is gushing out of it. Although it would normally gush out with the engine off too....

It's not a major job to replace for someone who knows what they are doing - and should be done as part of a 60k service with the cambelt, thermostat, little stubby water hoses. Jeff at Zedworld can do the lot in less than half a day.....

Also these engines are tougher than you think; so even if it has over heated it does not by any means suggest the engine is toast. Replace the above items and it will most likely be fine!

As for oil pressure, the sender unit is a common fail - and bloody expensive at £100 for the OEM one. The symptom is, normal readings when cold; but when the engine is up to temp, the needle drops to very low or zero. Again, nothing to worry about, providing the engine has no knocks or rattles when idling at full temperature; then the true oil pressure is probably fine!

Don't let this ruin your experience of ZX ownership - good luck; you should find all the help you need on here!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I had a leak only recently and was throwing water in like crazy for just the smallest of journeys and I too was overheating as a consequence, I had a split hose caused by age at the very front of the engine that joins onto the top water pipe, this hose is only about 5 inch long so check here.

Well said Richard, saved me typing that lot out !(phew)

To echo what Richard has said do not write the engine off yet, you may be lucky enough to have caught it early, I would check the small pipes above the pump first as these can be changed quite easily and not at a massive cost, fill it back up get all of the air out and give it another go...be brave!

Where about in Northants are you? There are a couple of us nearby that may be able to help you.

Hello and welcome to the club. I can't say any more than what has already been said really, but good luck with it, and as stated don't give up on the engine just yet. Take some of the local help off the guys, and the outcome may be better than you are thinking at the moment.

I'm in Wellingborough. This is my second 300zx, the first one I had about 8 years ago died after getting caught in a flooded road and ended up sucking in water and bending a con rod. I bought for £3000 and sold for a £1000 for spares (someone on here had it I think). This one doesn't owe me so much because its a bit rough round the edges but might end up the same way if its not a cheap fix.

very unlucky dude. anyone trying to sell suff that thay know is broke with out telling you should be shot at dawn. when i was 18 i got a 205gti drove home fine but the next day opened the oil filler cap and was all white the head gasket was gone the seller just cleaned it off so when we oped it the oil cap was clean i hate people that do this its 100% out of order
