After making a few calls it seems that companies that will repair a cracked alloy wheel are few and far between.

has anyone had a wheel repaired/welded before and if so who did you use?.

the problem im having is that most wont weld a spoke.

IMO nobody in their right mind would do a repair on that and be responsible for the consequences of it failing again. (and it will in all probability )

Would you really be comfortable driving at any speed ( not to mention the forces exerted) on a welded up wheel spoke that may let go at any moment with potentially fatal results, or consider putting your family , friends and others at risk, I guess the answer is no, chuck it away, surely someone on here can help locate either A) a good new set of wheels or B) a replacment for the one that is knackered.

Just my opinion no offence intended

I agree you have to also ask if an impact has caused a spoke to crack where else is the metal fatigued that you can't see ?

Not to mention this is a cast wheel, cast metals are notoriously hit and miss to weld. When you weld it you will change the material proprieties in that section, this means that when put under stress (bumps even heat)it will react differently to the rest of the wheel. This is a recepie for another fracture.

Sorry to say but I think you would be bonkers to weld it.

so although the weld would be more than strong enough, no ond would try to save the wheel?

wouldnt mind if these were just some cheap wheels but these were 2k without tyres.

although i do understand the concerns of fixing them, surely if done professionaly it should be safe?

Like I just explained to you it's more to do with the variance of the metals proprieties rather than its strength as such. Cast alloy and the Ali that would be welded in are different. Not to mention te effect that would be had on the spoke by the extreme localised heat from the welding process. If you welded it, the first little pot hole you tapped would probably re crack it. If that happened at motorway speeds or higher you may or may not find yourself unhappy, I say may not because you may not survive long enough to be unhappy.

people are right to not to consider it, professionals would be even less likely to especially a wheel where there is an obvious safety implication.

if they are proper split rims, phone round and try and get a replacement. A decent manufacturer will supply parts and be interested to know why this wheel failed trace down the casting batch and find a root-cause to protect their name.

looks like i may need to try find a front pair as close to these as i can.

Closest to these ive seen were on baz's old zx, but he sold them.

Your wheels are Axis Hiro. A company called 'Dare' took the rights to the moulds from the wheels and sold them as Dare Hiro. They are one piece cast wheels of which when available were around £700 for a set of 4 in 19" when both axis and dare sold them. Who did you pay £2k for them?

It looks like this company might still have stock, it may be worth asking them if they would sell you 1 wheel or buy a set off them...

Edit: Apologies, I've just noticed yours are the split rim jobbies - disregard :) nevertheless, I agree with the above, I wouldn't consider welding that.

If it helps, they're Axis Milano wheels.

I've done a little research and it seems these wheels will be near impossible to get hold of for a replacement, doh! It seems that they're replicas of a wheel called the Maya DTS which is possibly made by Trafficstar. Those wheels are 2 piece forged and would easily cost £2k new.

thanks joely.

these have been like rocking horse s#!t to find.

hoping i can still get one tho.

you must be a wheel god to of found the right model of wheel.

now to try and source some.

  • Author

i may have to do that yet.

but for now youve give me some names to search for in order to try getting some more.

no other wheel suits the z as well as these do, imo.

I still say send the bill to the council....... for a full set if you can't find a replacement

problem with that is proving which/where its happened.

and even if i could the council are only liable for the one wheel, even if they cant be replaced.

Hi Dave, might be worth contacting Axis and seeing if they have a dealer anywhere with some old stock??? info@axiswheels.com

Also the council will only pay for the wheels that are damaged, not full sets.... I had this and only got paid out for 2 wheels and they were no longer available....

Managed to get 2 from smiths wheels as they had 3 that a customer had replaced due to pot hole damage.... 2 out of the 3 were good and 1 was slightly buckled....

Got me out of trouble though..... Bloody councils...... I had picture of huge sunken drain cover and they knew about it for a week and didn't repair it till the day after my phone call when I told them they owed me £900.....

well axis emailed me back today and unfortunately they dont have any of these wheels left at all.

so i will keep looking.

cant really see me getting much for 3 wheels.

I got the price of 2 out of the 4 and a letter saying take the money or try taking us to court then...... I took the money..... luckily got the 3 from smiths wheels that they had from a damaged set.....

I now have 3 slightly buckled wheels in my garden and still trying to find a company that might be able to straighten the lip on 2......

The wheels you have look a bit like the Axis shine.... I looked on ebay uk and the US earlier for you..... but couldn't find anything of any size.....

they definitely axis milano alloys, comfirmed on here and by axis themselves.

will have to gather my evidence for a claim then.

I was thinking.... Put in a claim.... explain the set is not available....... ANYWHERE IN THE KNOWN WORLD...... and give them 3 quotes for sets of wheels, make 2 as expensive as you can and 1 the set you would like to have, being the cheapest....

I bet they go for the set you want......lol
