Anyone running a reverse camera on their Z?

Just something I am toying with. I believe my Alpine double din head unit has an input for a reverse camera. I can't find the destruction manual at the moment. There's no option to set it up in the menu, but is it just a case of, plug in the camera and the head unit automatically switches on the screen when it has an input...and/or turns off the current source you're on?

Yeah pritty much. I was thinking of getting one. I cannot see naff all out the back of mine.

My old man has fitted one to his camper so it comes on when he's reversing

there just pinhead lenses now...saw one the other day on the back of a police van and it was no bigger than a match head so could be easily hidden from the centre panel on a zed

Yeah, trying to find a small one. Probably small angled one that fits under the plate or something.

Does it and most headunits work the same way that they'll automatically switch on or over when the reverse camera is activated?

With mine i wired the live to the reverse light feed and with the rca/phono jack in the head unit, it will automatically turn on when you select reverse and off when out of reverse, so the screen also changes when it senses the signal.

You can get ones now that replace the number plate light, fits in the oem recess, so no drilling required and it still has illumination for the plate

Thats a nice size Bri, i have to admit when i originally did mine i took the camera and board out of the housing and fitted it into the keyhole, got rid of the mechanism and it fitted perfectly, i always use the lever to open the boot anyway.

They're nice, but I don't want to drill one in my 99 spec rear panel. If I did drill anywhere, it would be at the very top of the number plate, but that would look out of place.

I've been debating this but for the front, I was thinking somewhere at the bottom of my number plate. just so I know when a speed bump is gunna rip the bottom off.

Good idea. You can double it up as a regular camera then. This is what a friend of mine did at one of the Z meets I went to in Los Angeles. Bit of fun. This meet actually was a kick-ass meet, one of the funnest I've been to. Spot the beautiful Stramann TT vert.

I agree Si - I would not want to either.........

....So I'd do what Graham has done and pop it into the existing key hole. I also open the boot with the lever only (mainly as the lock has seized - LOL) but you get the idea!!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

That's cool Si, I thought all verts were NA's?

the only thing holding me back is that it'll look ugly on the front if it's a big camera, but it would have to be low enough to be able to see the bottom of the bumper, otherwise it would defy the point. But if it can be moved then that would be cool.

It'd give me the confidence to drop the front another 10mm anyway.

Now thats a far better idea than mine Graham...i keep forgeting the keyhole is useless on these cars

Straman are a high end conversion specialist who often built pre-prototype cars for the OEMs. The Z32 convertible was a conversion that was done using the Twin Turbo model. It looks a little different than the regular factory made convertible as it's actually a modified coupe shell. They are pretty rare as I think the conversion was some $10,000.

I actually think it looks a little nicer than the factory version as it has a higher waistline...it also has a power hood! This is a pretty grubby looking example, but it shows the lines off. Straman also did a Z31 conversion too.

Ah I see, looks nice, but i'd still prefer that one off hard top model that was doing the rounds a few years ago...

Yeah, that was an NA unfortunately. That was actually commissioned by Nissan and was due to go into production. The whole point of the Straman conversion was that you could turn a factory built Twin Turbo into a full convertible. The hard top Z lived in California for a while and use to go to some of the Supercar Sunday meets. I believe it was bought by a collector in Florida and now lives out there.

ime not a big fan of the vert iff ime honest..is it me or does anyone else see the Vauxhall cavalier convertable in one
