How do you know if the diff is buggered?

Tonight was the 1st time I gave it some beans and about 80ish I got like a loud wiring and a slight vibration in e rear any ideas?

Or a dodgy wheel bearing. Or a fooked one piece prop?

Can't see how it could be the one piece prop, nothing mechanical. Obviously what it it joins together is. Wiring sounds like gearing and if it is the back end, drive shafts/diff. Bearings usually tend to make more of a rumbling sound. Check your diff oil level especially if you have recently changed it over.

If you can, get the rear end up in the air (good quality stands), start her up and put her into gear and have a listen, hopefully you will hear it a low revs and no load.

Oops missed the bit about vibration, that could definitely be the prop. Did you get the complete set up off a known car?

The prop I got was off Jeff and my old man said there was quite a bit of play in it when we got it

Diff was off an unknown car. Think it was Sandy old one. Yeah will be trying it up in the air trick

Forgot to say you get the knock when you change gear of take your foot on or off the throttle

Somethings not right there. I would be getting underneath asap and checking assembly out for movement and 'float' on the prop.

Yeah, get it in the air it my become apparent.

Does it sound like grinding, I bought an na setup from jeff...

when I fitted it there was a grinding horrible noise and it was the diff..

slick pete sorted me out a diff and I met him at mike feeneys to pick it up mike asked if I drained the oil which I had and it was dark and thick and sticky, he said the name of what part had gone in the diff but I cant remember lol.

but put the new diff on and noise was gone...

Will have a look there is no grinding everything is nice and smooth up to 80.

Could the prop be out of balance or the worn uj joint? You can get universal ones off eBay. Any ideas?

A monaro vxr is looking mighty tempting now

It's the whirring noise that's bugging me. An out of balance prop will vibrate the car at certain speeds, yes, but as for the sound; I would be concerned that you can hear it whilst doing 80 over road and engine noise level.

As for 'universal from eBay' I wouldn't be messing around with the drive train. If you do suspect the prop, I'm sure someone on here will have one lying around that you could fault diagnose with (2 piece with bearing) that you could try. Relatively a quick job.

If you need a hand or second opinion, I am at Valley for a while and don't mind popping over one evening and giving you a hand. Offers there, let me know. If not, hope you get it sorted ad don't buy a vauxhall!!!lol

I'm far from the best mechanic but why not jack up the rear put it on stands, get someone to spin the wheels and if you hear a nasty whining noise from the diff then you know its knackered? I did this with my old seat ibiza when the gearbox was whining and turned out I needed a new box. Hope this helps mate good luck :)

Found the problem. All the vibration when slowing down is purly down to .well errm the vibration and the sound of the exhaust :lol:

But i have also found play in the UJ at the rear of the new prop. with the car jacked up and you turn the wheel by hand it all clicks. will have to see if jeff can sort me out with something?

Where to start :(

crazy question m8 but did you check and top up the oil in the diff? just read the rest of the posts, lol ignore me, haha.

Think I've found the problem of the worn cliky prop. Well there was no bloody grease in the uj.

Poped out and bought a grease gun and stared pumping it in. She'd loads went in and next to nothing came out and what did was black.

So spun the wheels buy hand and now it's smooth and silent. Still a smidge of play but what prop hasn't :)

Rep for the guys that offered help

I bet the lack of grease has took the needle bearings out...might be better re-building the UJ before you fit long term Dave as iff they are goosed it wont be long before they go worse
