We have done a compression check on our track z since it started to tick like mad, got these results

1-172psi

2- 200psi

3-172psi

4-200psi

5-178psi

6-198psi

Those readings seem high, we triple check with the same results, doesn't the passenger side bank seem high?

Stock 2nd hand unopened TT?

or Rebuilt ? (spec?)

Standard spec is 186psi, although most typical mileage decent condition examples tend to come out at 150-160psi. If the engine is stock then could be looking at a gauge that over-reads or coked rings. If you've gone forged and had head work done, then would depend on Piston choice, head skimming and head gasket fitted.

The important thing is the difference between them, but they are consistent per head so I would be happy with those results.

As far as we know it's stock. Uk spec , 130k mile roughly. We tracked it at keevil a couple of weeks ago and now I has a nastily tick (more of a tick then a knock) we wanted to illiminate holed piston etc and got them results, I'm concerned it's rod -piston bearing? Engine idles fine and revs fine just ticky, changed the oil and used some engine flush but it's still there,

Its a shame because it went really well!!

I hope it wasn't an over read lol, I'm guessing that's my tester lol. Those numbers however are weird, you had the scope in there yet?

We are trying to diagnose a loud tick, which got increasingly louder on our track day,

Sounds ticky, cammy, not knocky bottom end,

We have stripped the rocker covers to get down to the lifters

Now what we have found is the side with the high compression, we can move the lifters by hand as if they are moving on the lifter internal spring, the other side is solid we cannot press them down by hand.

Does it sound as if the High compression side lifters are draining or is the fault on the other side with the solid feeling lifters????

It sounds exactly like this

We are going to strip out the lifters and clean them all, let's hope it's nothing more sinister as we want to get some more track time in :-)

let them soak over night in white spirit then the second night soak them (fully submerged) in clean engine oil. Dont strip them Gaz as they rarely go back together and are right again. I have a full used set here that never ticked so iff you think yours are goosed then make me an offer:wink:

Thank you for the offer, I do have 3 pairs of spare heads so have quite a few already lol. I did strip one of my spares as a test, didn't seem to bad a job, just time consuming ;-)

Can anybody answer this?

whats your oil pressure like ?

Can't tell as its oem gauge and there sporadic at the best of times,

so you not using an Aftermarket ..

as its going to be a track car that would be one of the first things u need Fit ..

see when lifters start to Tick/clunk

its one or 2 things ..

there worn out .. or Low Oil Pressure

Worn out will only be one or two out of the 24 in there

low oil pressure can make them all rattly and can sound really bad

there is a check valve in the heads can you access them without removing the heads??

Im wondering if that is blocked on one side?

According to Ash specs are:

NA: 186psi is 'perfect', minimum of 136psi.

TT: 174psi is 'perfect', minimum of 121psi.

Mine has started to do the same thing after a hard run home from yesterdays meet..Factory oil pressure...165 psi across every hole (warm and dry)... normal looking plugs...tick from a lifter or lobe and un-even idle:no: TT running a bar of boost. Looks like ile have to lift the cams and have a sniff around.

Update, after stripping off the heads the passenger side was recieving no oil, had a good spare where I only had to rebuild 3 lifters, the problem was the orifice check valve in the block being gummed up and the ball in it sticking.

After 20 minutes if cleaning and oil started to flow back out the hole,

I have rebuilt the top end and we dropped the block back in over the weekend, today i managed to get Down there and bolt up the gearbox so I could turn it over with the cam covers off, we now have oil flowing to both heads so that's a great result,

now to finish putting it back together and see if the problem is sorted, all this is trying to get it ready for trax in Sunday!!!

wish me luck

It runs!!! After a few teething problems eg faulty ecu and initial ticky lifers it seems to run alright. Tomorrow will be the test at trax, but fingers crossed we can get a few sessions out of her. She is no fairlady as she has fought us all the way. It's probably the worst z I have ever had the misfortune of working on but it was bought cheap and its purpose is a track toy. So whoever is going I will hopefully see you at trax, I'm taking my red z too so look out for spongez the track slag and asahi the red rising sun :-)
