In my garage I have a regular light socket for your typical incandescent light bulb. Now I'm wanting to fit a strip light in there instead to offer slightly more light and a larger angle of spread, so II'm going to get a strip light fitted.

Before I do, I remember seeing a product a few years ago that was basically a long strip-light chassis with a bayonet fixing that you could simply put into the existing socket, thus turning your normal light socket into a strip light chassis.

Anyone remember these? I know it's not difficult changing the chassis over, but just wondering if anyone has ever seen these?

Ive seen them before, not sure if you can still get them, another tip.for.more light is to paint your ceiling white and maybe your walls if you can be bothered, makes a big difference

Yeah I think I need to do the ceiling. It's an integrated garage, so it has a plastboard ceiling. I need to finish painting the floor first.

You want a decent smooth masonary paint if your doing the walls and ceiling, no cheap emulsion that will flake off if it gets damp

The quick fit sockets are still available although not too sure if these conform to latest legislation????

Why not connect it properly or leave the strip light on a plug and cord so you can move it around or leave it hanging.

I had a couple of old office light fittings that were slung out becuase they don't meet the current regs. Each held four 1m tubes and after I had repaired the weird ballast/starter things worked great and threw out really good light.

whats your roof like ?

if you can get more natural light in its 100000 times better than any other type of light

I have a plastboarded ceiling and I think it would be a nightmare unless I have some sort of permanent fixture.

Sorry mate. Not what I am thinking about.

I kinda thought about that. They're HUGE too!

It's an integral garage. Plasterboard ceiling. Above....is a bedroom!

Think I'll just get a complete 6ft strip light up there. They're not expensive, but I was just wondering whether that old adapter thing still existed.

Thought about drilling a hole right through and fitting a series of mirrors....then I thought...narr, I'll just go down to Wickes.

Just get a fluorescent light fitting and fit a plug on the end of the cable... Simples

Ive got 16 double 5ft units in my workshop....cant have enough light for the dark winters:wink:

You bstard Bri... I physically couldn't get that many lights on my ceiling :(

When you are getting a new fitting get ones with colour 840 lamps give out a white light instead of the horrible yellow colour. Or if you really wanted to impress you get led versions of them to but they are quite expensive. I did have lots of strip lights lay in my garage think it may only be 4 ft ones I have left now though
