I know the whole static show is not for everyone, and tbh by lunch time me personally I'm done with the major shows. Walking round the civics doesn't really get my juices flowing lol, I only really turn up to chat to the club members and if applicable see what's going on, on track. So I was thinking, what sort of things are we not doing that you would like to be doing?

For example planned road rallyes, BBQ's, zed specific track days of some sort?

What would make you think YES that I want to attend! Ideas on a postcard please.

I frequent a lot of the Z meets in the USA as I am heavily involved with the scene over there. Generally most meets start at a diner somewhere for a breakfast run. Then a route is selected and we all tend to drive it. I go to many of the meets with the LAZ32 guys in Los Angeles and we often head up into the canyons. The meets usually lasts all day long. Some people do the entire meet, some people do sections. Appreciate that the road network and the amount of members is completely different. There are all sorts of other car events in SoCal also, so there's always something to do. In the UK, there aren't unfortunately as the car scene....well, there really isn't one. The last meet I went to, last month actually, we all met up at 'Supercar Sunday' which is like Cars and Coffee. Jay Leno usually turns up to that one. We got Bruce Jenner instead (Kim Kardashian's step Dad....as he only lives round the corner from where the meet is). Then the guys all went off for a cruise down to Malibu. The one before that we all went to MB2 Go-Karting in the morning, then lunch at Denny's and then some canyon-carving.

The trouble with organising a 'cruise' is that the roads in the UK are complete horse shit. Not only are they excessively congested, but there are better surface qualities on the moon. Driving in convoy and enjoying the roads in the UK is quite a hard thing to do. Parts of Scotland and Wales, you could have decent long cruises with breakfast and lunch breaks. Anywhere else, good luck!

I liked the idea Jeff had of meeting up and doing a road trip to a beauty spot for a meet. I like JEA once a year but personally do not like being in one place too long as I get bored quite easily.

The road trip around Ireland mentioned earlier sounds like a great idea.

As I said earlier and confirming what Si says, got some great roads around here and mid Wales, which i know most of them as being a biker who unlike most car drivers we do just go for a ride :)

Also the Ireland thing was an idea I had a while ago, can sometimes get some good deals on the ferries from west Wales :)

Im with you on the static shows... been there and done loads especially in my 240Z days.

I just do what I like anyway . whether there are other 300s there isnt important to me.

Hence I go up to York RWYB meets

I have booked to go to Trax again this year at Silverstone cos you can get a 20 min session on the Grand Prix track for £30.

Motorsport has always been at the heart of my car world. My avatar shows me on the Manx Rally in 1972 with my works replica CooperS. at my age now Im a bit more limited ... A few runs up the strip or a 20 min track session is about all I can manage!!

There are some good driving roads in the Peak District and as a Zclub organizer I used to do one each year in the Spring.

Motorsport has always been at the heart of my car world.

Saves me typing this out :D :D

Really struggle with static shows, did so many back in the day they just don't do it for me anymore really. Happy as Larry as long as there's drfiting, track or drag strip action to watch or participate in. So that's BDC, Time Attack, the various RWYB days at Pod & Shakespeare and of course Ten Of The Best.

As for road trips, the Mecca that is Le Mans. Got mates that go every year, but never had time. I'd find time for a Zed expedition, that would be amazing :cool3:

I've heard Snowdonia is pretty nice :)

It is, went there not long ago with my girlfriend for a long weekend. The roads are amazing, wide and in the best condition I've seen in the UK. I literally don't think I hit a single pot hole the whole weekend, uncongested and no speed cameras either..... There was a new Maclaren and a 458 Italia blasting around the hills, looked like epic fun!

When my car is on the road I will be up for everything. Driving and shows with motorsport like TA with modified live are cool, ive been to the Snetterton one the last couple of years which was good. Right now I just have to put the time in on the car. I am mega excited to join in though and props to you guys for taking on this challenge of stepping it up a level, fair play:thumbup1:

Classic car show like the one we did at Trentham I thought was a great day and would be up for visiting (and organising more) as long as others want to go along

The convoy to a beauty spot sounds good to me and I would be very interested in this type of meet

Would it be possible to organise one fairly central in the UK (Say Peak District for no other reason than it as it is the nearest to the middle) http://www.nationalparks.gov.uk/ and have several convoys coming in from arranged pre-meet points in other areas? Then lunch and a drive around the area all together as one big convoy.

That would be a perfect day for me

Oh.... and the day I actually get my car back repaired!!

Rich

As much as i admire anyone going to shows, meets and fun and games including the members who sort this out for others i personly dont really enjoy walking up and down lines of cars. I get out and drive my car as much as possible for MY pleasure...i help run this forum for everyones pleasure...and try help as many members out with bits and pieces including favours for both. TBH ime getting a little bored now with brain washing telling me ime not doing enough for the good of the zed scene and comunity across the board...By me not meeting half a dozen owners at a dogging carpark somewhere and talking zeds does not mean i dont love, care or not bothered about the club or its "future path" so ime just letting everyone know were i am on this and other recent "show and shine to prove your mine" type threads.....Ice tea anyone????

You still drive it about, which is a lot more than some. The important part is you use it and enjoy it, how you do that is irrelevant.

well i must be a right thorn in your side not even owning one?

I'm not really sure how to interpret that or answer it if I'm honest.

  • Author

Well you cant bring a car to the table as a non owner but that's not overly the point, there are other things you can do, and obviously do do. What would you like to do? What would you like to do off forum within the scene? For example if we did do a treasure hunt you could still be a navigator for another member and be involved. I guess really I cant answer your question.

You are heavily involved within the forum as a moderator etc which is positive, what I'm trying to encourage is more actual membership activity off forum so sort of a separate issue. The only way someone could be a thorn in my side is to say you must not do this, you cant have fun and people shouldn't turn up to any events. That's pretty unlikely I think, I hope.

How about a London meet, there could be some great photo opportunities day or night plus plenty to do once there.

I get an allergic reaction within the m25 im afraid lol

im all for meets and get togethers as long as they are 5 mins from my house, i get travel sick very easy hence i barely leave sunderland lol

but i do do a lot for the forum in ways that doesnt require a car, i do hope im helping the club, im very honest and very open as in i say what i think (without trying to offend) and sometimes that is a good thing

its good your trying to get the club motivated and i really hope you do, but ive been about 7 years now and ive seen all this before, its not the club that is the problem but the people using it, fingers crossed you succeed where others have failed, and good luck with it

oh and now my insurance is sorted im hoping to ba able to pout a few quid away, so it may take a while but i will have another zed someday (or i win the lottery tomorrow lol)

Totally agree stella, its the mind set of the membership that's the issue, its all good organising things. however if they arn't the things people want they wont turn up and its time wasted.

That is actually not far from my own view to be honest.....

....Don't get me wrong, I enjoy getting together with everyone at a big event like JAE once a year; but I just don't have the time to commit a whole weekend and prefer to "pop along" for a few hours. It's also nice to spend a lunch time at a local pub meet, catching up with a few familiar likeminded owners for a drink and a sandwich every now and again. But like Brian says, the pleasure I get from my ZX is from owning, driving, waxing and admiring it. And to do my bit for others in the ZX owning community, I help to run this club in my spare time.

Meets are a great thing for the ZX owning community - but not everyone has the time or inclination to be part of the social scene that comes with it. The evidence of that is apparent in the dwindling number of people attending some of the meets; and no doubt why Mr Bolt has started this thread....!! I realise this must sound daft for someone on the committee of a car owners' club; but wait, why should it? I'm not the most overtly outgoing, sociable person so the whole event organising thing just is not my bag - there are others in the club for whom it is, so that's what they have roles like NEO/REO etc.

I actually think it's great that Steve has taken the time to ask this question though; as it might help explain why the good folks are not turning out in their droves. And if they want to turn out, what would entice them to do so more frequently; it should give Voddy some ideas for future events. But at the same time, don't dismiss those members who are happy to quietly enjoy the pleasures of owning and driving their 300zx at their leisure!
