As I was putting the Z back in the garage this afternoon, I noticed quite a puddle of oil on the drive....

.....taking a closer look, it's all in the very front of the engine - in front of the radiator. You can see it in the mouth of the bumper, on the splash guard in front of the oil cooler. I'm guessing one of the oil cooler pipes has sprung a leak. I'll have to get it booked into the garage for them to take a look.

Could the cooler itself have burst; or is it more likely just a hose? Hopefully it's a simple fix....

Thought that sounded familiar, Rich. Here's a story with some pics of the MJP replacement. http://www.300zxtt.co.uk/z1newoilcooler.htm .The "expert" who diagnosed he issue and his mechanic took bloody weeks to sort out, wouldn't answer phones etc - now there was a bloke who really deserved a ban. But that's another story. Nothing to do with MJP who I still use to this day and rely on as a proper expert.

Hope this helps.

Cheers people!

It could only have started yesterday too; the garage floor was spotless when I took the Z out in the morning and the undertray area you ca see through the mouth of the bumper was nice and dry - if a bit (well a lot) dusty.

I left the car on the drive when I got back from the shops and, when I had finished washing the Merc, I drove the Z back into the garage - and that's when I first spotted the oil. I have taken it out today to give it a wash and there are small oil marks, 3 about 3 inches in diameter, under the car; about an inch or two under the front bumper. The botton of the oil cooler has oil residue around it, bit it looks otherwise OK. I guess it is just a hose or hose connector. We'll see when I get the car looked at by my local mechanic in the week - I don't want to drive it too far with an oil leak!!

Heh heh - I did think that Mike!! One of Julia's friends has just been round as they are going out to a flower show this afternoon. When she saw both the cars on the drive, she asked which one I liked best - and you know I just had to say "The Z of course!!"

Quite right too - don't want to refer you to the ban committee

sometimes the hardpipes going into the cooler corrode causing them to leak. I had to repair one once. so annoying!

I've got an oil leak on mine.. crank seal I think. Anyone fancy shedding any light on whats involved in replacing the crank seal?

Remove gear box, clutch and flywheel and you will see it. Remove it without scratching the mating surfaces otherwise it may leak through the scratch. Get a genuine one from Mike at MJP and replace.

I have to do mine but fortunately the engine is out. However, I made a stupid mistake and put my sump back on before doing this otherwise I could have removed the cover that it sits in and replaced it off the engine which would have been alot easier! If I do it before you do yours I can put up some pics but it seems pretty straight forward.

Bloody hell its oil leak day...just come back from a 150 mile blast to be confronted with a leak that appears to be from top of pump..those who are familar with the motors its looking like the pressed in bung next to the 2 10mm pump-block feed bolts:confused:

thanks eggs. an easy one then! :P :P

Its been bugging me since I got the car 18 months ago, it hardly drops any, and everytime i check the oil, theres plenty, the oil pressure is fine, but everytime i go under my car to do some work, everything is covered with film and crap! I'm pretty sure she only drops oil when shes hot too.

Hi all,

I finally got the car in at my local garage yesterday - and collected it today all fixed!!

Luckily it was a minor issue and I was right!! Apparently one of the hoses to the oil cooler fell foul of the electric fan - so as the fan spun it sliced a hole into the hose. End result, 3 hours labour, a bit of rubber hose and some jubilee clips; and all is well. Nothing else needed to be disturbed.... Plus they cleaned up the oily mess and topped up the sump once more!

Thats good news Mate. Could of been a disaster waiting to happen on a long road trip out in the sticks.

Great news Richard, not too bad a deal.

No mate - not bad at all... It's a proper old school village garage too; the owner is a decent, honest fella and if something is too complex, he's happy to say so and not charge for his time if he could not fix it. Plus him and his regulars have that mutual trust - so when I collected the Z, he apologised for not having the bill ready; gave me the keys and said he'd post it to me in a couple of days, so just pay it when I can pop in.

Of course he knows where I live... But that's not the point!!

It could indeed have Bri.... I have never had to top up the oil in my Z since I bought it; but when I noticed the leak had started a couple of weeks back (it happened on my way back from Sainsburys 2 weeks ago tomorrow; as there was no residue on my garage floor before that), I had only driven 20 miles and already the level on the dipstick dropped from full to just above the low mark!!

It's a shame that these kind of places are few and far between now. We have a similar one in our village, Mike is great, changed a fuse for me in the Zed not long ago and said no charge, I know that's not a big deal, but it goes a long way. However the man I really do trust with my Zed is Keith kjz32.

Exactly mate - and it's a local family business; the proprietor took it over from his father and has done a good job of continuing the business. Him and his staff do accept their limitations though - as they tried but declined to change an inboard HICAS joint on my old red ZX; but I'm happy for them to look after Julia's Rav and do the day to day servicing of my ZX. Plus there's always Zedworld for the specialist stuff!!

It's handy for you to have Keith pretty close by Ian:wink:
